Chapter 1 - The Card in Emma’s Hand

Ethan’s first thought was not that Emma had lied.
It was that he had misunderstood what he saw.
She was still in his arms.
Still visibly pregnant.
Still breathing hard from the fall.
Still the woman he had just sprinted across polished marble to catch.
But the tears were gone.
The terror was gone.
And inside her right hand, half-hidden by her cream dress, was the sealed access card Ethan had carried in his jacket all morning.
VAULT 17.
Claire’s voice rang down from the balcony.
“She jumped for that.”
Emma looked directly at Ethan.
“Too late.”
Ethan’s body went cold.
He lowered her carefully onto a padded bench beside the atrium wall, keeping one hand behind her back until she was steady.
Then he stepped away.
“Give me the card.”
Emma closed her fist.
“No.”
Claire started down the staircase.
Ethan pointed at her.
“Stay where I can see you.”
Claire froze halfway.
Three minutes earlier, Ethan would have crossed the room to confront her.
Now he didn’t know who had just tried to harm whom.
“Emma,” he said again, “give me the card.”
She smiled faintly.
“You don’t even know what it opens.”
“I know it was in my pocket.”
“And I know you were never supposed to have it.”
That sentence changed everything.
Ethan had received the card that morning from his late father’s estate attorney, Caroline Webb.
No explanation.
Only:
Your father instructed that you personally open Vault 17 once the Bennett merger vote was complete.
The merger vote had happened yesterday.
His father had been dead for nineteen months.
Ethan had not told Emma about the card.
He had not told Claire.
He had not told anyone.
So how did Emma know it existed?
Claire reached bottom stair.
“Because she’s been waiting for it.”
Ethan turned.
“You knew?”
“I knew someone would come for it.”
“Someone?”
Claire stared at Emma.
“I didn’t know it would be her.”
Emma’s expression hardened.
“Stop pretending you were protecting him.”
Claire laughed once.
“I was protecting what’s inside.”
“From me?”
“From everyone.”
Ethan moved between them.
“Enough.”
He looked at Emma.
“Did you jump?”
Emma said nothing.
“Did Claire push you?”
Silence.
Claire pointed toward balcony rail.
“Ask her why there are no heel marks where I supposedly kicked her.”
Ethan looked up.
From below, impossible to tell.
Then Emma finally spoke.
“She was trying to stop me.”
“From what?”
“Getting close enough to you.”
Claire snapped:
“She told me she’d fall if I didn’t back away.”
Ethan turned.
Emma did not deny it.
That was first payoff.
The fall had not been exactly what it looked like.
But that did not yet prove Claire innocent.
Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.
A message from Caroline Webb.
URGENT: DO NOT USE VAULT 17 CARD.
Ethan stared.
Second line:
THE ORIGINAL ACCESS CARD WAS REVOKED THREE DAYS AGO.
He looked at Emma’s fist.
“What you took from me…”
Caroline’s next message arrived.
“…is a decoy.”
May you like
Emma’s cold smile vanished.
For the first time since the fall, she looked genuinely afraid.
