Chapter 10 - Richard’s Letter to Emma
Emma opened under supervision.
Richard Bennett had written one year before death.
Emma,
If you’re reading this, then either Rebecca found courage to tell you, or the truth found you another way.
I owe you an apology.
He described role.

helped Rebecca hide from Samuel pressure.

believed Rebecca voluntarily extended separation based on documents Martin provided.

supported trust arrangement for Emma, believing Rebecca wanted distance.

learned Rebecca’s rights termination advancing.
He tried persuade her return.
Rebecca refused after new threat.
Richard thought threat came from Samuel.

Michael Arden showed email proving Rebecca alive.
Richard hired investigator.
Located Rebecca.
She refused contact.

Richard learned document alterations.
He confronted Martin.

created Vault 17.
Why not contact Emma directly in person?
He tried through letters.
Then feared showing up would replicate control.
He asked Caroline to wait until Emma turned thirty unless Rebecca acted sooner.
Was that right?
Maybe not.
Richard admitted:
Every year I found a reason to delay one more year.
Then:
The worst thing I did was let a temporary safety plan become a permanent life because changing it required admitting how badly we had failed.
Emma cried reading.
Not absolution.
But context.
Then a second page:
Do not assume your mother wanted to leave you forever.
Do not assume she was prevented every day either.
Both things were true at different times.
That sentence cut through.
Rebecca had been threatened and manipulated.
She also made later choices from shame.
Emma deserved both.
Then final:
Vault 17 does not contain the answer to whether Rebecca loved you.
No document can answer that.
Ask her.
Emma looked at Rebecca.
For first time, not as mystery.
As woman.

Rebecca cried.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you come?”
“Because after enough years, I thought seeing me would hurt you more than staying gone.”
“You decided for me.”
“Yes.”
That was answer.
Then Emma asked:
“Were you ever paid to stay away?”
“No.”
Vault records supported.
No hush payment to Rebecca.
Living support Richard provided under false names during first two years, then Rebecca supported herself.
Northcrest beneficial trust for Emma existed independently.
So no secret fortune motive.
Then Ethan asked Caroline:
“Why was Vault 17 opened after merger vote?”
Because Bennett Holdings merger changed trustee structure. Richard wanted historical conflicts disclosed before new board assumed control.
Timing governance-based.
Emma’s decision to jump was unnecessary.
If she waited, Caroline would have contacted Ethan and Rebecca.
Emma had believed window closing.

AFTER MERGER, 17 WILL BE DESTROYED.
False.
Who sent?
Tracing showed burner purchased by Martin Vale’s grandson? Perhaps too many relations. Better Martin himself.
Martin admitted.

He wanted Emma to create chaos so vault access delayed and Rebecca looked unstable.
He sent Emma old Richard photo.
He told her vault would disappear.
He knew she was dating Ethan from public photos.
He nudged.
Did he tell her to jump?
No.
Emma devised.
Martin manipulated information, not exact act.
Now final adversarial role clearer.
He feared Vault documents exposing altered agreement and bonus.
The scheme:
make Emma distrust Ethan/Richard,
push her to seize access,
cause family scandal,
then challenge document integrity as compromised.
