Chapter 2 - The Decoy Card

Ethan called Caroline immediately.
“Why was I given a decoy?”
“Because someone accessed your father’s sealed instructions before you.”
“Who?”
“We don’t know.”
“Then why hand me anything?”
“Your father anticipated interference. The visible card was meant to flush out whoever came for it.”
Ethan looked at Emma.
She heard enough.
“You knew?”
“No,” he said. “Apparently neither did you.”
Claire came closer.
“What opens the real vault?”
Caroline answered through speaker.
“No card.”
“What then?”
“Biometric dual authorization.”
“Whose?”
A pause.
“Ethan Bennett and one other person named in your father’s sealed instruction.”
“Who?”
“I cannot disclose over phone.”
Emma stood.
Ethan immediately blocked her.
“Sit.”
“I’m fine.”
“You fell from a balcony.”
“I didn’t hit the floor.”
“That doesn’t make you fine.”
She pressed one hand over her stomach.
For a second, concern replaced suspicion.
Then she caught him noticing.
“Baby’s moving.”
Ethan’s chest tightened.
Whatever Emma was hiding, the pregnancy was real.
Or at least visible.
He refused to treat her as invulnerable just because she had lied.
Claire said:
“She knew you’d catch her.”
Ethan turned.
“You can’t know that.”
“She practiced.”
Emma’s face changed.
Claire continued:
“I found videos on her phone.”
Ethan stared.
“What videos?”
“Camera tests from this balcony. Angles. Distance. Your usual position downstairs.”
Emma said:
“You went through my phone.”
“You left it unlocked.”
“Because you took it.”
“Because you threatened to jump.”
There it was.
A new layer.
Claire and Emma had been fighting before Ethan entered atrium.
Not about pregnancy.
Not jealousy.
Vault 17.
Ethan demanded timeline.
Claire admitted she had followed Emma upstairs after seeing her photographing railing.
Emma admitted she had been testing sightlines.
Why?
“I needed to know whether Ethan could see me if I called.”
“That’s not what your clips show.”
Claire held up her own phone.
One recovered video showed Emma stepping onto a chair near railing and measuring distance to floor.
Another showed her dropping a weighted pillow from balcony.
Timing fall.
Ethan felt sick.
“You planned this?”
Emma answered carefully.
“I planned a way to get the card without you suspecting me.”
“By making me think Claire tried to kill you?”
“I knew she’d confront me.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Emma looked at Claire.
“She has spent a year lying to you about what your father did.”
Claire went still.
Ethan heard the shift.
This was larger than vault mechanics.
“My father?”
Emma nodded.
“Vault 17 contains evidence he hid.”
Claire whispered:
“You don’t know what it contains.”
“I know enough.”
“How?”
Emma pulled a photograph from inside her dress pocket.
Old.
Creased.
Black-and-white security still.
Ethan’s father, Richard Bennett, stood outside a bank archive room.
Beside him:
a young woman Ethan had never seen.
On the door behind them:
Emma said:
“That woman was my mother.”
Ethan stared.
“When?”
“1998.”
Claire looked shocked.
Not performatively.
Genuinely.
Emma continued.
“My mother disappeared three days after that photo.”
May you like
And for the first time, Ethan understood why Emma had wanted the card badly enough to risk a fall.
She believed Vault 17 held the answer to what happened to her mother.
