Chapter 6 - The Second Card
Bank security detained nobody.
The person fled before staff intervened.
Camera showed woman in baseball cap and sunglasses.
Height.
Build.
Walk.
Claire stared.
“That’s Rebecca.”
Emma stood.
“No.”
“Look at her.”
Ethan watched carefully.
Could be.
But no certainty.
Then woman removed glasses briefly at exit.
Emma covered mouth.
“Mom.”
Rebecca had attempted access.
Why use decoy if she was legitimate biometric holder?
Maybe she didn’t know system changed.
Or she was testing.
Caroline called facility.
Rebecca’s biometrics were indeed on file from 2019.
She could have opened legitimately.
She chose not to.
Then why?
Minutes later Ethan received message.
Unknown:
DO NOT OPEN 17 WITH REBECCA.
SHE IS NOT ALONE.
Attached photo:
Rebecca outside bank.
A man twenty feet behind.
Face blurred by camera angle.
Emma said:
“He’s the one from my mother’s old photo.”
Which old photo?
The 1998 bank image showed Richard, Rebecca—and at far edge, partially visible man.
Emma had cropped him out when she showed Ethan.
Ethan turned.
“You hid this.”
Emma looked guilty.
“I didn’t know who he was.”
“Then why crop?”
“Because I wanted you focused on your father.”
Manipulation again.
Even while accusing others of hiding context, Emma had curated evidence.
She gave full photo.
Man in 1998:
thirties,
dark hair,
wire-rim glasses.
2026 follower:
sixties,
gray hair,
same posture.
Facial recognition could not confirm from poor quality.
Victor Dane identified:
“Martin Vale.”
Former Northcrest controller.
Alive.
Retired Florida.
Why following Rebecca now?
Martin was accountant who prepared backdated entries under Samuel’s direction.
He had legal exposure historically but settlement resolved much.
Then Caroline found something else.
Martin received immunity in 2000 for cooperation with regulatory review.
So he wasn’t hiding old crime.
What did he want?
Martin contacted Ethan voluntarily after seeing police search.
“I’m trying to stop Rebecca from destroying Vault 17.”
“Why would she destroy it?”
“Because she thinks it proves she abandoned her daughter for money.”
Emma flinched.
“What does it actually prove?”
Martin answered:
“It proves she signed an agreement.”
“What agreement?”
“Temporary separation and asset protection.”
Rebecca had signed in 1998 document agreeing:
Richard would place Northcrest proceeds into protected trust for Emma,
Rebecca would remain away during safety review,
contact restoration planned after six months.
Six months.
Not forever.
Then amendment in 1999 extended another year.
Signed Rebecca.
2000 amendment:
indefinite until threat cleared.
Signed Rebecca.
Emma’s eyes hardened.
“She kept choosing to stay away.”
Martin said:
“That’s what the signatures look like.”
But were they voluntary?
He didn’t know.
Richard believed yes.
Then Emma asked:
“Why would she want destroy?”
“Because she told herself for twenty years those signatures didn’t exist.”
That was harsh speculation.
Need verification.
Rebecca suddenly called Ethan.
“Do not believe Martin.”
“Where are you?”
“Close.”
“Why did you try decoy?”
“To see whether Richard’s trap still worked.”
“Why?”
“Because Martin has another card.”
Ethan looked at security photo.
“Why would he?”
“Because Vault 17 was never built to keep people out.”
