Chapter 4 - Claire Knew About Rebecca
Claire finally admitted why she had been panicking upstairs.
Not because she wanted vault contents for herself.
She had met Rebecca.
Two months earlier.
At a motel outside Philadelphia.
Rebecca was now fifty-five.
Alive.
Using name Rachel Owen.
Claire had traced her through Michael Arden’s old files.
Why didn’t she tell Ethan?
“Rebecca begged me not to.”
“Why would you listen?”
“Because she showed me what your father did.”
Emma moved forward.
“What did he do?”
Claire looked at Ethan first.
“He helped her disappear.”
Emma froze.
“That’s a lie.”
Claire pulled out a flash drive.
Rebecca’s recorded statement.
Ethan listened.
Rebecca’s older voice:
“Richard did not threaten me. He got me out.”
That one sentence overturned twenty-eight years of suspicion.
In 1998 Rebecca discovered Bennett Capital funds being used to mask losses in a subsidiary called Northcrest Holdings.
Not illegal by itself.
But accounting entries had been backdated to make quarter look stronger.
She reported.
Richard initially resisted.
Then learned board chairman—his older brother Samuel Bennett—had authorized.
Richard believed scandal could destroy company and pensions.
He asked Rebecca for forty-eight hours.
She refused.
Then her apartment was searched.
Not by Richard.
By private investigator hired by Samuel.
Rebecca panicked.
She had infant Emma.
Richard realized danger.
He moved Rebecca and child into secure hotel.
Then something happened.
Rebecca left Emma with her own sister for “one night” while Richard arranged safe relocation.
Rebecca planned return.
She never did.
Why?
Because someone sent her photograph of Emma asleep in sister’s home.
Message:
LEAVE ALONE OR THE BABY BECOMES PART OF THIS.
Rebecca believed Samuel’s people were watching.
Richard advised federal protection.
Rebecca refused.
She feared company insiders would learn.
She vanished using private witness network.
Why not take Emma?
Because surveillance already centered Rebecca.
She believed taking baby made both easier to track.
She chose separation for weeks.
Then weeks became months.
By time she tried reclaim, legal complications plus new threat.
Was Richard right to help secrecy?
Maybe partly.
But years?
No.
Rebecca said:
“Richard kept promising he would clean company, then bring us together.”
He eventually did expose Northcrest accounting internally.
Samuel stepped down.
Pension losses avoided.
No criminal charges after restatement.
But Richard still did not reunite Rebecca and Emma.
Why?
Because by 2001 Emma had bonded with adoptive placement.
Rebecca’s parental rights case already underway.
Richard’s lawyers argued sudden return could destabilize child and reopen threats.
Rebecca agreed temporarily.
Then regretted.
System hardened.
She lost legal rights.
Emma’s face collapsed hearing.
“You let them adopt me?”
Rebecca on recording:
“I let fear choose for me, and then I let shame keep choosing.”
Claire stopped video.
Emma looked shattered.
Ethan did not touch her immediately.
He waited.
Then Emma whispered:
“Where is she?”
Claire answered:
“She left motel two days after we met.”
“Why?”
“Because she thought I told Richard’s attorney.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then who knew?”
Claire said:
“Someone followed me.”
