Chapter 8 - What Was Inside the Ring
They did not force it immediately.
A jeweler confirmed inner band contained narrow mechanical compartment.
Something thin could be hidden inside.
Daniel wanted it opened.
Investigators insisted controlled procedure.
Vanessa became visibly nervous.
“What do you think is inside?”
She answered too quickly.
“Nothing.”
Daniel stared.
“You've seen this ring before.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night Rachel disappeared.”
Silence.
Vanessa had been at Whitmore Manor that night.
Another fact never disclosed.
Rachel called her.
Why?
To deliver envelope to Richard.
Vanessa arrived at 10:20 p.m.
Rachel was frightened but not hysterical.
She wore wedding ring.
She told Vanessa:
“Richard thinks he can fix this quietly. He can't.”
Vanessa asked what happened.
Rachel said:
“Daniel inherited something Arthur never owned cleanly.”
Then gave Vanessa sealed envelope.
Vanessa delivered it to Richard.
Hours later Rachel’s car was found by river.
Vanessa stayed silent because police would ask why she was involved.
Richard told her Rachel likely died accidentally.
Then he instructed her never mention meeting.
Daniel's voice shook.
“You saw my wife hours before she disappeared and never told me?”
“Yes.”
“And later you entered my life?”
“Yes.”
Whatever love had grown between them, foundation was contaminated.
Then ring compartment opened.
Inside:
Not deed.
A narrow strip of old photographic film.
One frame.
After development:
Arthur Whitmore standing beside a much younger Rachel.
Date stamp:
Two years before Daniel believed they met.
On table between them:
Orchard House documents.
Arthur knew Rachel.
Then handwriting on back:
THE HOUSE RETURNS WHEN THE GIRL COMES HOME.
What girl?
Rachel?
Lily?
Emily?
Someone else?
Vanessa whispered:
“That's what Richard was looking for.”
But why would film prove anything legally?
It didn't.
It proved history.
Then Emily recognized location.
Orchard House cottage.
Arthur had met Rachel there.
Why?
A recovered 2017 audio file answered partially.
Arthur:
“I can’t give it back directly. Daniel would inherit the liability with the property.”
Rachel:
“Then put it behind me.”
Behind.
The engraving:
NOT BELOW. BEHIND.
Not direction through mansion.
Legal structure.
Put ownership behind Rachel?
Maybe Rachel served nominee.
Then Arthur said:
“When the child is old enough, she decides.”
Which child?
Lily wasn't born.
Daniel and Rachel hadn't even met.
So Arthur couldn't mean Lily.
Unless another child existed.
Danger of genealogy. Could be "child beneficiary" of employee family? Let's avoid hidden child. Maybe he meant Rachel herself? She was adult. No.
Could refer to future child anticipated? Weird.
Better audio: “When Daniel is ready, he decides.” But user wants mystery. Use “when my son is ready.” Fine.
Arthur: “When my son is ready, he decides.”
Daniel stared.
His father had arranged something through Rachel before introducing them.
Then Daniel asked Emily:
“Did my father introduce me to Rachel deliberately?”
