Chapter 7 - Richard’s Missing Client
Richard Hale had not merely advised Rachel.
He had once dated Emily.
That was how he learned private childhood details.
Years later Rachel hired him because she trusted Emily’s judgment.
Then Emily discovered Richard had been moving client money through opaque structures.
She left him.
Rachel continued investigating.
So Richard knew Orchard House.
The ring.
The childhood signal.
Vanessa.
And possibly the service passages if Rachel told him.
Could Richard have staged woman behind wall?
Where was he?
Officially living in Florida.
Police located apartment.
Empty for two months.
No missing-person report.
Then financial records showed recurring payments to a private rehabilitation residence under another name.
Richard was alive.
Recovering from severe stroke.
He could barely speak and had limited mobility.
He wasn't crawling through mansion walls.
But his old files contained photographs of Whitmore service passages.
Why?
Rachel sent them.
Subject:
IF HE WON’T TELL DANIEL, I WILL.
Who was “he”?
Arthur?
Arthur dead by then.
Maybe Daniel himself?
Then another email:
RICHARD — IF I DISAPPEAR, DO NOT GIVE VANESSA THE ORIGINAL.
Original what?
Vanessa broke.
She had spent years searching for it.
Not ring.
A deed.
Orchard House beneficial deed.
Richard believed Rachel concealed it inside mansion.
Vanessa entered Daniel’s life initially because she wanted find it.
There.
Not love alone.
Not random romance.
She had financial motive.
Daniel stepped back as if struck.
“So you came here because of Rachel’s money.”
“At first.”
“And Lily?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I never planned to hurt her.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You dragged her away from that vent.”
“I was terrified she was feeding someone who could expose me.”
That was not an excuse.
Then Vanessa admitted the full reason she crushed bread.
The hidden woman had whispered through vent the previous night:
“Tell Vanessa I found the original.”
So when Lily said “she’s hungry,” Vanessa realized Lily had contact with same woman.
She panicked.
Then Daniel asked:
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because if the original exists, I could lose everything.”
“What do you have to lose?”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Not your money.”
“Then what?”
“My freedom.”
She had signed documents for Richard.
If original proved she knowingly processed fraudulent transfers, she could face legal exposure.
She insisted Richard deceived her.
Maybe.
Then Lily whispered:
“She said Vanessa didn't steal it.”
Vanessa turned.
“What?”
“The lady.”
“What exactly did she say?”
Lily concentrated.
“She said, ‘Vanessa didn't steal the money. She hid the name.’”
Daniel stared.
“What name?”
Lily didn't know.
But the ring rolled from vent after that.
Maybe engraving contained name.
Lab enhanced interior.
Under D + R and date was a tiny symbol.
An apple tree.
Orchard House mark.
Then investigators discovered band had microscopic seam.
