Chapter 5 - The House That Owed Money
Whitmore Manor appeared fully owned by Daniel.
Legally, that was incomplete.
Arthur transferred the property to his son while a private secured obligation remained attached through an old family holding company.
Current adjusted value of obligation:
$17.3 million.
Daniel stared at attorneys.
“Who do I owe seventeen million dollars to?”
Nobody could answer because Orchard House Holdings ownership was concealed behind a trust.
Beneficial owner sealed.
Rachel discovered this before she disappeared.
That explained notebook.
Maybe.
But why ring?
Then a hidden page was found inside notebook binding.
Rachel wrote:
Arthur says the house was never meant to belong to one Whitmore again.
Daniel felt another crack open beneath him.
His father had died five years earlier.
No secret survival.
No melodramatic resurrection.
But Arthur had been famous for complicated financial structures and for treating family wealth like a chessboard.
Rachel apparently discovered one after marrying Daniel.
Then Daniel asked Vanessa the question she had been avoiding.
“Did Richard know who owned Orchard House?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“He never told me.”
“Did you ask?”
“Once.”
“What did he say?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“He said if Daniel ever finds out, he’ll realize his father didn't leave him a mansion. He left him a debt to a woman.”
A woman.
Could that woman be Rachel?
Maybe Rachel secretly controlled Orchard House.
Then her own $4.6 million transfer would make little sense unless she was funding it.
Or protecting something.
The woman behind vent might be beneficiary.
Then greenhouse camera from neighboring estate delivered breakthrough.
Nine days earlier, a woman entered Whitmore grounds at 3:12 a.m.
Dark hood.
Thin build.
She used old greenhouse service entrance.
Face obscured.
She carried canvas bag.
Same bag Vanessa found.
So woman arrived nine days earlier.
Exactly when Lily first heard voice.
Rachel could be alive.
But footage also showed something else.
Two minutes after woman entered—
a second person arrived.
Vanessa.
Daniel stared.
Vanessa had claimed she discovered passage three weeks earlier and hadn't returned.
Lie.
Again.
“Why were you there?”
Vanessa began crying.
“She called me.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“She knew your number.”
“Yes.”
“What did she want?”
“The notebook.”
“Why?”
“She said it belonged to her.”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Did she sound like Rachel?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel froze.
Then who was behind wall?
Vanessa whispered:
“She sounded like Rachel’s sister.”
