Chapter 6 - The Sister Who Didn’t Exist
Rachel was an only child.
Birth certificate.
School records.
Family photographs.
No sister.
Vanessa insisted Richard had once mentioned another girl raised with Rachel.
Not biological sister.
Foster sister.
Name:
Emily Shaw.
Rachel’s mother took Emily in unofficially after Emily’s mother died.
They grew up together for six years.
Then something happened.
Emily disappeared from family records at seventeen.
Not literally missing.
She left.
Changed surname through marriage.
Built a quiet life elsewhere.
Rachel rarely spoke about her.
Daniel had never heard name.
Could woman be Emily?
Investigators located her.
Emily Shaw Mercer, forty.
Alive.
Living in Oregon.
She appeared by secure video and looked nothing like Rachel now.
She had not entered Whitmore Manor.
She had not contacted Vanessa.
But she recognized Orchard House immediately.
“Rachel named it after us.”
Why?
As girls, Rachel and Emily spent summers at an abandoned cottage called Orchard House.
Rachel promised that if she ever had enough money, she would create a fund for women leaving financially controlling families.
That sounded charitable.
But corporate records showed Orchard House Holdings predating Rachel’s marriage.
Emily explained.
Rachel’s mother established first version.
After her death, Rachel inherited control.
So Rachel may indeed have owned company holding lien on mansion.
Why would Arthur owe Rachel’s company?
Emily didn't know.
Then she saw ring on screen.
Her expression changed.
“That isn't Rachel’s ring.”
Daniel almost laughed from disbelief.
“I put it on her finger at our wedding.”
“The gold is hers. The engraving isn't.”
Emily remembered Rachel replacing inner band after wedding.
Rachel told her:
“If Daniel ever sees second date, he'll know Arthur kept his promise.”

So Arthur and Rachel had financial agreement before Daniel even met her?
Impossible.
Daniel met Rachel in 2019.
Or believed he did.
Then Emily corrected him.
Rachel met Arthur first.
Years earlier.
Arthur helped establish Orchard House as private protective fund.
Why?
Emily refused to speculate.
But she knew one thing:
Rachel didn't marry Daniel to get Whitmore money.
She already controlled a claim against Whitmore Manor before meeting him.
That reversed entire assumption.
Then Daniel asked:
“Was Rachel planning to take my house?”
Emily answered:
“No. She was trying to make sure your father couldn't.”
Arthur had placed manor under protective lien voluntarily.
Why would owner protect property from himself?
Perhaps creditors.
Perhaps family.
Then Lily tugged Daniel’s sleeve.
“The lady is back.”
Everyone went silent.
From vent came three soft taps.
Pause.
Two taps.
Emily heard through phone.
Her face drained.
“What?”
Daniel asked.
Emily whispered:
“That was our childhood signal.”
“Rachel’s?”
“Yes.”
“Could anyone else know it?”
Emily hesitated.
“One person.”
