The Woman Behind the Vent / Chapter 1 / 25

Chapter 1 - Mommy Lives in There

Daniel heard Lily scream before he saw her.

He rushed from the adjoining hallway and found his five-year-old daughter crying on the marble floor, Vanessa standing over her. Crushed bread lay beneath Vanessa’s heel.

Daniel dropped beside Lily and pulled her into his arms.

“What did you do to her?”

Vanessa’s expression shifted instantly from anger to composure.

“She was crawling around the floor again. I was trying to stop her.”

Lily buried her face against Daniel’s jacket.

Then pointed.

Not toward Vanessa.

Toward the rectangular wall vent near the kitchen.

“Please... she’s hungry.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Daniel noticed.

“Who’s hungry?”

Lily pointed harder.

“Mommy.”

Everything inside Daniel seemed to stop.

Lily’s mother, Rachel Whitmore, had disappeared almost two years earlier.

Police had eventually concluded that she likely died after her car was discovered beside a flooded river. No body was recovered, but Rachel’s blood was found inside the damaged vehicle, her coat was recovered downstream, and there had been no verified financial activity, phone use or confirmed sighting since.

Daniel had resisted declaring her dead for more than a year.

Eventually, for Lily’s stability and estate administration, he accepted a legal presumption of death.

Vanessa entered his life months later.

Now Lily was pointing at a vent.

“Mommy lives in there.”

Daniel slowly set Lily down and approached it.

Nothing.

Then an adult hand appeared between the slats.

Daniel froze.

A small gold wedding ring slid onto the marble.

It rolled until it touched his knee.

He picked it up.

His breathing changed.

He knew the scratches along the band.

He knew the tiny dent near the setting.

Rachel’s wedding ring.

The ring that had never been recovered after her disappearance.

Vanessa took one step backward.

Daniel turned the band toward the light.

There was engraving inside.

But years of grime obscured most of it.

Only three characters were visible:

D + R.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Explain this.”

“I can’t.”

“Whose hand was that?”

“I don't know.”

Lily shook her head violently.

“She does.”

Vanessa looked at the child.

For the first time, there was genuine fear in her eyes.

Daniel crouched beside the vent.

“Rachel?”

No answer.

He reached for the screws.

Vanessa lunged forward.

“Daniel, don’t open that.”

He turned.

“Why?”

Her lips trembled.

“Because if the woman behind that wall is who I think she is…”

May you like

She looked at Rachel’s ring.

“…then your wife didn't disappear from this family two years ago.”
