Chapter 13 - The Night Rachel Came Home
Daniel had met Vanessa eighteen months earlier.
Their relationship began later.
But Rachel returned to manor on the night of a Whitmore Foundation dinner.
She saw Daniel and Vanessa speaking privately.
From distance, it looked intimate.
It wasn't yet.
But Rachel already knew Vanessa worked for Richard.
She concluded Richard had placed Vanessa near Daniel.
Rachel panicked.
Instead of approaching husband, she left.
Again.
One misunderstanding layered over another.
Rebecca begged her to contact Daniel directly.
Rachel refused until she had original deed and proof.
Then Rachel disappeared from Rebecca too.
Why now return?
The original deed must still be in mansion.
The ring engraving said:
NOT BELOW. BEHIND.
Maybe Rachel came through service passages to retrieve it.
Then Rebecca disclosed final financial clue.
Original deed had amendment Arthur wrote personally.
It did not transfer Orchard House custodianship to Rachel.
Rachel was temporary custodian.
Permanent successor triggered upon specific event.
What event?
“Daniel discovering the lien without being told by a Whitmore.”
Why such strange condition?
Arthur wanted son to independently confront family history rather than inherit sanitized story.
Manipulative even if well-intended.
Successor?
Rebecca didn't know.
Name sealed on deed.
Richard desperately wanted it because successor could control $17.3m restitution obligation and block mansion sale/refinancing.
Vanessa may have been used to locate deed.
Then Lily remembered something.
The woman behind vent told her:
“Daddy has to find the picture.”
Family picture beside fireplace?
Daniel searched.
Nothing behind frame.
Then noticed backing replaced.
Inside cardboard:
a thin brass tab.
Not deed.
A key.
It opened small compartment built behind baseboard opposite vent.
Inside:
Empty.
Someone already removed contents.
Only torn envelope.
ORCHARD HOUSE — ORIGINAL.
The deed had been there.
Who took it?
Security footage showed Vanessa near family photograph months earlier.
She denied finding key.
Maybe Richard had told her location.
Then Daniel searched her belongings with consent/order.
No deed.
But one photograph showed Vanessa holding document at Richard’s office before his stroke.
Zoomed.
Orchard House seal.
Vanessa finally admitted:
“I saw the original.”
“You told me you didn't.”
“I lied.”
“Who is successor?”
“I never saw that page.”
“Why?”
“Richard tore it out before I could.”
Where page?
Richard kept inside red client ledger.
Ledger missing.
Then Rebecca whispered:
“Rachel has it.”
How know?
Because Rachel sent message two weeks ago:
I FOUND THE PAGE. I’M GOING HOME.
So hidden woman was increasingly likely Rachel.
But Daniel still had no face.
No direct identification.
Then Lily ran toward vent before anyone could stop her.
“Mommy?”
A woman whispered from darkness:
“Bluebird.”
Daniel’s knees nearly gave way.
He knew voice.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakable.
“Rachel?”
Silence.
Then:
“Don’t come in.”
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa isn't the person you need to be afraid of.”
Daniel turned.
Vanessa looked equally shocked.
Rachel continued:
“She was only looking for the deed.”
“Who are you afraid of?”
