Chapter 2 - The Passage Behind the Kitchen

Daniel did not tear open the wall.
He called police.
That decision infuriated Vanessa.
“You're turning Lily’s fantasy into an investigation.”
Daniel held up the ring.
“Fantasy didn't roll this across the floor.”
Within an hour, the mansion was secured.
The vent was removed under supervision.
Behind it was not a room.
A narrow service passage disappeared into darkness between the kitchen wall and the original stone foundation.
Old architectural plans revealed something Daniel had never known.
Whitmore Manor had been renovated repeatedly over eighty years. The oldest section contained servants’ corridors, heating shafts and maintenance tunnels later sealed when the kitchen wing expanded.
The vent opened into one of them.
A search team entered.
They found bread wrappers.
Water bottles.
A blanket.
A flashlight.
Someone had unquestionably been there.
But no woman.
The passage led to three exits.
One ended behind the wine cellar.
One opened through a concealed maintenance door near the greenhouse.
The third descended beneath the mansion.
That section had collapsed or been deliberately blocked with a steel panel.
Daniel stared at the supplies.
“How long?”
An investigator estimated days, perhaps weeks.
Not years.
So Lily’s claim that Mommy “lives in there” couldn't be literally true for two years.
Unless whoever was inside had recently returned.
Then Lily explained something Daniel had missed.
She had first heard noises from the vent nine days earlier.
A woman whispered her name.
Lily was frightened.
Then the woman said something only Rachel used to say:
“Bluebird.”
Rachel’s private nickname for Lily.
Daniel had not heard it since Rachel vanished.
“How many times did you bring her food?”
“Four.”
“Did you see her face?”
Lily shook her head.
“Just her hand.”
“Did she tell you she was Mommy?”
Another shake.
That mattered.
Lily had decided it was Mommy.
The woman never actually claimed it.
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“How did you know Lily was feeding someone?”
Vanessa said she heard Lily whispering.
“Then why did the word ‘she’ scare you?”
“It didn't.”
Daniel knew her too well.
It had.
Then investigators examined the ring.
Authentic.
Daniel had photographs proving Rachel wore it.
But something was wrong.
The engraving had been altered.
Original inscription from their wedding had been:
DANIEL + RACHEL — ALWAYS HOME.
Now additional words had been scratched beneath it.
Crude.
Recent.
Daniel could make out only:
NOT...
The remaining letters were clogged with dark residue.
Before laboratory cleaning, investigators photographed everything.
Then one officer emerged from the greenhouse carrying another object found beside the hidden exit.
May you like
A burgundy high heel.
Vanessa was wearing its matching pair.
