Chapter 3 - Vanessa’s Missing Shoe

Vanessa stopped denying she knew about the passage.

Three weeks earlier, she had discovered the greenhouse entrance accidentally after seeing a panel partly open.

She went inside.

Her heel broke.

She left it.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I found something.”

“What?”

“Rachel’s things.”

Daniel’s anger vanished into something colder.

Vanessa said a canvas bag sat inside the passage.

Rachel’s scarf.

Old photographs.

A prescription bottle bearing Rachel’s name.

And a notebook.

Vanessa took the notebook.

She claimed she intended to show Daniel.

She never did.

“Where is it?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then led investigators upstairs.

The notebook was hidden beneath the lining of her jewelry case.

Daniel stared at her.

“You hid my missing wife’s notebook beside your jewelry?”

“I panicked.”

“For three weeks?”

Vanessa said the notebook contained accusations against Daniel.

That was why.

Rachel had written during the months before she disappeared that someone inside Whitmore family was moving money through accounts she did not understand.

She suspected Daniel’s late father, Arthur Whitmore, had hidden assets using the mansion itself as collateral.

One page said:

DANIEL DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HIS FATHER LEFT UNDER THE HOUSE.

Another:

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, THE RING IS THE MAP.

There it was.

The ring was no longer only proof Rachel might be alive.

It was a key to something financial.

But Daniel recognized Rachel’s handwriting only on some pages.

Others looked different.

Forensic review confirmed later additions.

Someone had continued writing in Rachel’s notebook after her disappearance.

Who?

Vanessa denied.

Then police found fingerprints.

Rachel’s.

Daniel’s.

And Vanessa’s.

Expected after Vanessa handled it.

A fourth set belonged to an unknown woman.

Then the prescription bottle complicated everything.

It was issued six months after Rachel disappeared.

Same name.

Rachel Whitmore.

Same birth date.

But prescribed at a clinic seventy miles away.

If authentic, Rachel was alive six months after the river incident.

Daniel called clinic.

The physician remembered a woman using Rachel’s identity.

But he couldn't confirm she was Rachel.

The patient had worn sunglasses and scarf due “light sensitivity.”

She paid cash.

Then Lily quietly asked:

“Was she sick?”

Daniel crouched.

“Why?”

“The lady in the wall coughs.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

She knew that too.

Daniel turned sharply.

“How?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Because I heard her before Lily did.”

“When?”

“The first night I found the passage.”

“What did she say?”

Vanessa looked at Rachel’s ring.

“She said my name.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“And?”

May you like

Vanessa finally answered:

“She told me I was living in a dead woman’s house.”
