Chapter 5 - The Photograph

Police searched Eleanor’s study with warrant.
Photograph was gone.
But dust outline showed framed object had been removed recently.
Eleanor claimed she had no idea.
Then Ethan found picture on old cloud backup.
Group photograph.
Luxury ranch in Colorado.
Children and adults.
Ava stood near edge.
Date:
six months after official “transfer.”
Alive.
Beside her stood Margaret Cole.
And Eleanor.
Ethan felt betrayal settle deeper.
“You knew she was there.”
Eleanor stopped denying.
“Yes.”
“What was that place?”
“Cedar Ridge.”
“Why wasn't it in foundation records?”
“It was private.”
“For what?”
“Long-term placement for high-risk adolescents.”
Licensed?
At time, yes.
Records later sealed after lawsuit.
Ava had been moved there with mother’s signed temporary authorization.
But authorization expired after thirty days.
Ava remained six months.
Why?
Denise was not stable enough.
Who extended placement?
Court order?
None.
Foundation counsel used emergency clause repeatedly.
Legally dubious.
Eleanor admitted knowing.
Mia discovered.
She threatened public exposure.
Did Eleanor silence her?
“No.”
“Did you drug her?”
“No.”
Then why same white mixture in Mia’s room?
Eleanor’s answer stunned them.
“Mia stole bottle from me.”
“For what?”
“She wanted it tested.”
That was plausible.
Residue in glass may have been sample transfer, not drink.
Had Mia actually consumed it?
No surviving blood sample existed.
Assumption could be wrong.
Emma realized she had been building certainty from incomplete evidence.
Then Eleanor admitted framing Emma over Lucy.
Not full reason.
When Emma entered and attacked, Eleanor saw chance.
“I knew Ethan would believe me.”
“Why?”
“Because you had been asking about Mia again.”
Emma stared.
“You wanted Ethan to throw me out.”
“Yes.”
“To stop me investigating?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if you found Mia, you would destroy her.”
Emma froze.
“What?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“Mia is alive.”
Ethan stood so suddenly chair hit wall.
“Where?”
“I don’t know anymore.”
“You knew she lived?”
“Yes.”
“For two years?”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked as if mother had become stranger.
“Why?”
“Because she asked me not to tell you.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Eleanor explained Mia did not run away.
She left voluntarily with help.
Why?
To find Ava.
She believed Ava had been moved into network of unofficial placements.
Mia wanted expose it.
Eleanor tried stop her.
Not because she supported network—
because she feared Mia would put herself in danger.
Then Mia vanished deliberately.
Weeks later Eleanor received postcard:
I’M SAFE. DON’T TELL DAD.
No return address.
Eleanor kept it.
Police verified handwriting likely Mia’s.
Alive after disappearance.
That changed everything.
But postcard ended with one sentence:
IF EMMA EVER ASKS ABOUT WHITE BOTTLE, TELL HER IT WASN’T FOR ME.
Emma stared.
“If it wasn’t for Mia…”
Then who?
May you like
Eleanor whispered:
“For Ava.”
