Chapter 11 - James Reed

James Reed was not foundation employee.

He was child-rights attorney.

He had challenged Marlow House and Cedar Ridge placements.

Eleanor hated him.

Mia trusted him.

James took Mia after hospital under emergency youth advocacy agreement because Mia claimed home environment unsafe for whistleblower.

Could a fourteen-year-old legally disappear with attorney?

Not exactly.

He filed temporary protective petition under sealed juvenile case.

Ethan was never notified because petition alleged potential conflict involving Carter Foundation and asked delayed notification.

Judge granted forty-eight hours.

After that, case should have returned to court.

It didn’t.

Why?

Mia withdrew petition.

Then signed statement saying she wanted return home.

Did she?

No.

She disappeared again before transfer.

James claimed someone picked her up from motel.

Who?

Ava.

Ava was seventeen and emancipated.

She helped Mia travel to friend’s house.

From there Mia moved between advocates.

This became unauthorized, messy, but voluntary.

Was she alive now?

Ava said yes.

Last contact three months ago.

Ethan cried.

“Please.”

Ava finally agreed to relay message, not location.

Two days later Ethan received video.

Mia.

Sixteen now.

Older.

Alive.

“Dad.”

Ethan covered mouth.

“I’m safe.”

“Where are you?”

Video prerecorded.

“You keep asking wrong question.”

Mia continued.

“I didn’t stay away because Grandma drugged me. I stayed away because everyone in that house thinks protection means deciding for somebody else.”

Emma closed eyes.

That was entire pattern.

Eleanor deciding for Ava.

For Mia.

For Lucy.

Ethan signing without reading.

Foundation deciding consent.

Samuel deciding research value mattered.

Mia said she would come home only after Project Continuity shut down and records independently reviewed.

Then:

“Emma, if you see this, the white bottle Lucy had is not what scared me.”

Emma leaned closer.

“What scared me was batch number.”

Camera showed Mia holding photo.

Bottle label:

PC-17.

Lucy hospital lab had marker consistent with PC-17 research reference solution.

Why was PC-17 in Eleanor’s house?

Nora said standard reference solutions should never leave lab.

Courier records showed delivery requested by Samuel Price.

To Carter mansion.

Recipient:

ELEANOR.

Eleanor claimed she ordered pediatric nutrition, not research batch.

Shipping order altered.

Who changed?

Samuel’s account.

Samuel said someone hacked.

Logs showed manual override from his office.

Could be him.

Then Ethan asked motive.

Why send research solution to Lucy?

It was not toxic.

But if consumed, sample marker would appear in blood and could make Lucy look like active study participant.

That could create data point without consent.

Samuel might want that.

One baby data point seemed small.

Unless Lucy had rare marker combination valuable to study.

Emma felt violated.

Then Mia’s video ended:

“PC-17 is why I won’t come home.”

And one final line:

“Because I already found another baby who was given it.”

Emma stared.

Another baby.

Mia named her.

“Grace Holloway.”

Grace had died five years earlier.

Officially from congenital metabolic crisis.

If PC-17 was connected—

the white bottle mystery had just become much darker.
