Chapter 1 - The White Bottle

Lucy’s crying reached Emma before she entered the kitchen.
It was not the ordinary irritated cry of a baby who wanted to be picked up.
It was panic.
Emma rushed through the doorway.
Lucy sat strapped into her high chair, face flushed, arms flailing.
Behind her stood Eleanor.
In one hand, the grandmother held a large white bottle.
In the other, a spoon.
“Stop fighting it. Just swallow it.”
White liquid ran from Lucy’s mouth onto her clothes.
Emma’s entire body went cold.
“Get that away from my child right now!”
Eleanor turned too late.
Emma lunged between them, knocking Eleanor away from the high chair. The bottle flew from her hand and shattered across the floor.
Emma scooped Lucy into her arms.
“It’s okay. Mommy’s here.”
The baby clung to her.
Then the front door opened.
Ethan entered in his dark blue suit.
“What’s going on?”
Eleanor’s expression changed instantly.
“She hit me.”
Emma stared at her.
“You were forcing something into Lucy’s mouth!”
Eleanor pointed toward the broken bottle.
“No. She was.”
Ethan looked at Emma.
“What?”
“Your wife was forcing Lucy to drink it,” Eleanor said. “I tried to stop her.”
Emma could hardly believe what she was hearing.
“That’s a lie!”
Ethan’s gaze dropped to Lucy.
Then to liquid covering Emma’s shirt.
Then to white bottle fragments beside her.
The scene looked terrible.
And Eleanor knew it.
“Ethan, listen to me—”
But he was already angry.
His first instinct was not to ask Lucy.
Not to examine security camera above pantry door.
Not to ask why Eleanor’s hands were wet.
He believed his mother.
Emma felt herself being pushed out of her own home before she fully understood how quickly everything had turned.
Outside, Lucy cried and reached toward her.
Eleanor took baby from Ethan and held her tightly.
Emma stumbled onto grass.
“Give me my daughter!”
“No,” Ethan said. “Not until I know what you did.”
Something inside Emma broke.
Not because he doubted her.
Because this had happened before.
Two years earlier.
With Ethan’s older daughter.
Mia.
Emma turned toward storage shed beside driveway.
Inside was emergency torch Ethan used for outdoor fireplace.
She grabbed it.
When she turned back, tears were still running down her face.
“End it all!”
Ethan froze.
Eleanor’s confidence disappeared for one second.
Not because Emma held flame.
Because Emma was staring at white liquid soaking Lucy’s clothes.
Then Emma said something Ethan did not understand.
“It smells exactly like the night Mia disappeared.”
The torch lowered.
Silence replaced shouting.
Ethan stared at her.
“What did you just say?”
Emma looked directly at Eleanor.
“You told everyone Mia ran away.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
May you like
Emma pointed toward broken bottle inside kitchen.
“But that was in her room too.”
