Chapter 4 - Ava Brooks
Ava Brooks was not officially missing.
Foundation records showed she transferred with mother, Denise, to another shelter in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania shelter had no record of either.
Denise later surfaced under different address.
Ava did not.
Mia discovered discrepancy during volunteer program.
Why was teenager digging into records?
Because she met Ava once.
They became friends.
Ava told Mia she hated Marlow House.
Not because staff were cruel.
Because Eleanor kept asking her mother to sign papers she didn’t understand.
What papers?
Foundation guardianship authorizations.
Temporary.
Supposedly allowing emergency medical treatment and transportation.
Mia thought they were broader.
She photographed one.
Emma found photo backed up to old tablet.
Document allowed “temporary custodial placement during emergency transfer.”
That wording could enable child relocation without parent physically accompanying.
Why?
If parent hospitalized, detained, or unavailable.
Legitimate purpose.
Potential abuse.
Then Ava’s mother Denise was located.
She cried when police asked daughter.
“I thought Carter Foundation took her somewhere safe.”
“Did you sign transfer?”
“Yes.”
“Where were you?”
“In rehab.”
“When you came out?”
“They said Ava had been placed with approved kin.”
“Which kin?”
“I don’t have any.”
Someone lied.
Denise spent years unstable and believed paperwork.
Mia apparently found it first.
Then Ethan learned foundation executive responsible for transfers:
Margaret Cole.
Not Eleanor.
Margaret died last year.
Cancer.
Could Eleanor still be involved?
Her signature appeared as secondary authorization on some emergency files.
Including Ava’s.
Ethan stared at mother.
“You signed this.”
“I signed hundreds.”
“Where did Ava go?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did Mia ask you?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I told her stay out of adult matters.”
That sounded exactly like Eleanor.
Then Emma discovered note in Mia’s notebook:
AVA DIDN’T GO TO PA.
M.C. TOOK HER WEST.
M.C.
Margaret Cole?
Maybe.
Another line:
GRANDMA KNOWS WHERE.
Eleanor denied.
Then police found old van GPS archive.
Foundation van traveled west on night Ava “transferred.”
Not Pennsylvania.
To private airfield.
Who was aboard?
Records incomplete.
Driver:
Thomas Reed.
Still alive.
Thomas admitted transporting Ava and another adult to airfield.
“Who?”
“Margaret Cole.”
“Was Ava sedated?”
Thomas looked down.
“She was asleep.”
“With white mixture?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where did plane go?”
“Colorado.”
Why Colorado?
Thomas said Marlow’s emergency partner facility.
No official record.
Then he added:
“Mia found me two weeks later.”
“What did she ask?”
“Same questions.”
“What did you tell her?”
“Everything.”
“And then?”
Thomas looked frightened.
“The night Mia disappeared, she called me.”
“What did she say?”
“She said she found Ava.”
Emma leaned forward.
“Alive?”
Thomas nodded.
“At least she believed so.”
