Grace Holloway’s death initially looked horrifying.
But independent review corrected assumptions.
Grace had severe congenital metabolic disorder.
PC-17 was not poison.
It was experimental nutritional formulation used under compassionate-access protocol.
Her parents consented.
Treatment failed.
Grace died from disease progression.
No secret killing.
Why did Mia care?
Because consent paperwork for Grace was clear.
For Emma’s family it wasn’t.
Mia saw same batch number and feared Carter Biologics had moved experimental formula from sick infants into observational family studies without informed consent.
Was that true?
Samuel Price finally admitted partial misconduct.
After Grace trial ended, modified PC-17 became harmless reference formulation for absorption studies.
He expanded use through Project Continuity database.
He relied on legacy consents rather than obtaining new ones.
Illegal? Potentially.
Unethical? Strongly.
Dangerous?
Usually not.
But adding sedative changed safety.
That was Eleanor’s separate choice.
So Lucy was not being poisoned with experimental deadly substance.
She was being given research reference nutrition plus Eleanor’s antihistamine.
Still unacceptable.
Still potentially risky.
Then Samuel admitted requesting PC-17 delivery.
Why mansion?
He wanted obtain Lucy absorption sample.
Without Emma consent.
Eleanor agreed?
He claimed yes.
Eleanor denied.
Emails settled.
Samuel:
If Lucy takes 20mL tonight, tomorrow’s routine pediatric draw can generate comparison without extra procedure.
Eleanor:
No research enrollment.
Samuel:
It isn’t enrollment. Just reference.
Eleanor:
Fine. Send nutrition.
Eleanor had agreed to giving PC-17 while telling herself it was not research.
Another rationalization.
Then anonymous Mia messages?
Samuel sent some.
Not impersonating Mia directly.
He warned Eleanor Project Continuity active.
But “Get Lucy out before Emma gets home” came from someone else.
Who?
Nora Bennett.
Everyone stared.
Nora admitted.
She learned Samuel intended use Lucy.
She panicked.
She sent warning pretending to be Mia because she believed Eleanor would listen.
Why tell Eleanor not Emma?
“Nora, why?”
“Because Emma was on flight. I couldn’t reach her.”
“You had her number.”
“I thought Eleanor could remove Lucy from situation faster.”
Instead Eleanor decided relocate baby herself and sedate her.
A well-intended lie triggered abuse.
Again.
Nora looked devastated.
“I was trying to protect Lucy.”
Emma replied:
“Every person in this story says that right before taking someone’s choice away.”
Nora had no answer.
Then truth of framing emerged.
Eleanor saw Emma enter and attack.
She feared Emma would discover Eleanor had voluntarily agreed to PC-17.
She also feared Ethan learning she had sedated Lucy.
So she lied instantly.
“Emma was forcing her.”
It was not preplanned grand conspiracy.
It was opportunistic self-preservation.
Why was Eleanor so good at it?
Because she had spent years managing family crises through narrative control.
Then Ethan confronted own behavior.
He believed mother immediately.
Dragged Emma out.
Separated baby from her.
He had repeated pattern.
Emma’s torch response remained unresolved.
Why did she grab it?
Was she actually going to burn house?
Emma finally explained:
“No.”
Then why “End it all”?
She had not meant family.
She meant something stored in outdoor archive shed.
Project Continuity boxes.
Eleanor had once told her archived Marlow records were kept there temporarily.
Emma intended burn them.
Reckless.
Illegal.
Dangerous.
But not attempt to harm Ethan or Lucy.
Ethan stared.
“You were going to destroy evidence.”
“I thought I was destroying system.”
“You could have destroyed proof Mia needed.”
Emma closed eyes.
“Yes.”
Her rage had nearly repeated same pattern:
acting first, deciding for everyone.
That realization shattered her certainty.
Then Mia sent another message.
DO NOT BURN ANYTHING.

THE ORIGINAL CONSENT LEDGER IS STILL IN THAT SHED.
And whoever controlled that ledger could prove exactly which families Carter Foundation had enrolled without valid consent.
