Chapter 4 - The Sound of Rolling Glass

Claire dragged Emma past the far end of the dining table, her gold high heels making a sharp rhythm against the floor. But as she jerked Emma forward with a sudden, harsh force, her designer gown pulled tight across her waist.

From the hidden inner pocket of Claire’s emerald dress, a tiny object slipped out.

It was a small, half-used glass medicine vial.

The vial hit the white marble with a delicate, distinct click. It did not break. Instead, it spun along its axis and began rolling smoothly across the open aisle, propelled by the tilt of the floor, until it bumped gently against the heel of Victoria’s shoe.

The slight glass tap echoed softly in the sudden lull of the room. Claire’s head snapped around instantly. The color drained from her face faster than the cream had fallen from the spoon. She froze, releasing her grip on Emma’s hair so abruptly that the maid slumped back onto the floor near the doorway.

Claire turned her entire body around, her eyes fixed on the tiny clear container resting against Victoria’s foot. The arrogance that had painted her flawless makeup just seconds prior dissolved into absolute, paralyzing panic.
