Chapter 13 - The Unopened Envelope
Emma looked at Victoria in utter disbelief, her lips parting as she tried to process the offer. “I... I don't know what to say, Mrs. Sterling. Thank you.”
“You proved your loyalty when everyone else in this room was watching the spectacle,” Victoria said, her tone serious. “That is something money cannot buy in our world.”
Just then, Victoria’s personal assistant hurried into the room, holding a sealed black leather portfolio. He looked visibly shaken, his eyes darting toward the quiet corners of the hall before leaning in close to Victoria.
“Ma’am,” the assistant whispered nervously. “The preliminary lab report from our private contact at the hospital just came through via secure fax. They ran a fast-track analysis on the liquid in the vial.”

Victoria frowned, taking the folder from his hands. “And? Was it a sedative? A toxin?”
The assistant swallowed hard, shaking his head slowly. “No, Mrs. Sterling. It wasn't a poison at all.”
