Chapter 1 - The Spilled Cream on White Marble

The heavy crystal chandeliers of the Sterling Estate hung like frozen waterfalls above the grand banquet hall, casting a warm, brilliant glow over the dozens of wealthy guests in attendance. Gold-trimmed walls framed the lavish room, and the polished cream marble floor reflected the light so brightly it looked almost liquid. At the head of the long dining table sat Victoria Sterling, her long glossy golden-blonde waves framing a face of cold, aristocratic perfection. Beside her sat five-year-old Leo, his big blue eyes wide with innocent delight as he stared at the centerpiece of the feast: a towering, ornate cream cake sitting on a crystal platter.

Victoria lifted a silver spoon filled with a rich bite of the cake, her diamond necklace sparkling as she leaned toward her son. Leo opened his mouth with a bright smile. But before the spoon could reach his lips, a figure blurred into view. Emma, a young maid with chestnut hair styled in a tight low bun, rushed forward from the shadows of the serving aisle. Her face was pale, her expression sheer panic. Without hesitation, she struck Victoria’s wrist aside.

The spoon flew through the air, sending a dollop of cream skittering across the pristine marble floor. The sharp slap echoed against the gold-trimmed walls, cutting through the low murmur of chatter in the ballroom.

“Don’t let him eat that!” Emma cried out, her breath ragged, her hands trembling violently against her black and white uniform.

Victoria did not flinch immediately. She turned her head slowly toward the young maid, her sharp blue eyes narrowing into slits of pure, icy fury. In the aristocratic world of the Sterlings, no servant touched a member of the family, let alone struck the lady of the house. Leo pulled back, sensing the immediate shift in the room's atmosphere, as the surrounding guests froze, their eyes locked on the sudden breach of decorum.
