Julian never saw woman’s face clearly.
She contacted him using Rebecca’s secure email and supplied Margaret’s original authentication phrase.
He believed Rebecca had returned.
At mansion utility entrance, she wore hood and mask.
He objected.
She said Noah might recognize her too early.
Then she crawled into nursery passage.
Julian waited.
After Daniel discovered crib, woman vanished through second hatch.
Julian drove away.
So hidden woman might not be Rebecca.
Again uncertainty.
Then forensic audio compared live whisper to old recordings.
Not enough words for certainty.
Probability suggested Rebecca but not conclusive.
Crescent scar?
Could be imitation.
Then Sophie’s pink blanket yielded one strand of dark hair.
DNA.
Police compared against preserved Rebecca medical sample.
Not match.
Daniel felt devastated.
But DNA matched someone else in hospital archive.
Laura Bennett.
Emma’s mother.
Laura was alive.
Living under maiden name in another state.
Where was she tonight?
Missing from home for two days.

So hidden woman was Laura?

Then Rebecca arrived unexpectedly through other access.
Laura panicked.
Rebecca entered nursery space.
Noah saw Rebecca’s hand.

Laura answered:
“Because that's when Thomas Hale’s patent royalties change control.”

At seventh birthday, a dormant research trust transferred voting authority from hospital foundation to an independent family-appointed reviewer.
Who was reviewer?
Daniel assumed himself.

Noah.
Not legal control directly at seven; a child-protection trust triggered appointment of guardian-independent reviewer when beneficiary-linked child reached seven. Strange.
Better: Noah’s seventh birthday triggers Daniel’s eligibility as trustee? Margaret set date based on seven-year retention statute? Maybe records scheduled destruction after 7 years. That's cleaner.
Hospital records were eligible for routine archival destruction seven years after study closure.
Margaret chose Noah’s seventh birthday because that was last safe window to expose original data.
So urgency.
Then Laura handed Daniel a copy of destruction schedule.
Tomorrow, 8 a.m.
But one box had already been removed.
