Prototype neonatal biometric sensor.

Manufactured experimentally twenty-two years earlier.
Hospital claimed all prototypes destroyed after Thomas’s death.
Yet one had apparently been used on Noah seven years ago.
How?
Someone preserved technology and continued testing without proper disclosure.
Julian admitted hospital research division quietly revived Thomas’s design.
He objected.
Board overruled him.
Was Noah part of unauthorized trial?
Records showed standard monitor.
Photographs from Margaret’s box—one surviving copy Evelyn possessed—showed different sensor attached to Noah’s bassinet.
Rebecca did not consent.
Daniel did not consent.
Laura Bennett did not consent for Emma.
Two babies became unwitting validation subjects during chaotic storm.
Why hide?
If device failed or influenced treatment, liability.
Emma later died of congenital condition, not conclusively device-related. No simplistic “sensor killed baby.”
But Bennett lawsuit may have uncovered unauthorized testing.
Hospital paid settlement and altered records.
Margaret found out.
Then why wait seven years?
She didn't.
She began challenging board immediately.
Three days after Noah’s birth, Margaret died.
Natural cause from documented illness.
No murder.
But her death prevented disclosure.
She left evidence distributed among people she trusted.
Julian.
Evelyn.
Rebecca?
Rebecca had already died.
Maybe another.
Then Daniel asked about voice cassette.
Margaret recorded messages before Noah’s birth because she knew she was very ill.
But someone recently edited them into staged warning.
Who had access?
Julian digitized tapes.
Evelyn handled originals.
Hospital legal archive had copies due Bennett case.
Several possibilities.
Then Claire discovered something personally frightening.
The prototype sensor found in Sophie’s crib had fresh battery.
Someone activated it.
Not merely planted.
Engineer downloaded local memory.
It had recorded environmental audio for six minutes.
The nursery incident.
Noah crying.
Daniel entering.
The whisper.
Audio clearly captured a living woman under or beside crib.
So Noah had not imagined her.
Then engineer isolated whisper before Daniel arrived.
Woman:
“Noah, don't be afraid.”
Noah:
“Who are you?”
Woman:
“Ask your father what happened to Emma.”
Then:
“You look just like him.”
Noah:
“Like who?”
Woman:
“Thomas.”
There.
She meant Daniel’s dead uncle.
Why tell child?
Cruel, manipulative choice.
Daniel became angry.
Whoever woman was, she deliberately terrified Noah to force investigation.
Then another voice appeared faintly in recording.
Male.
From crawlspace.
“Time.”
Woman answered:
“Not yet.”
So she was not alone.
Two people entered mansion.
Police searched access points.
At exterior utility hatch they found vehicle tread.
Matched a van registered to Hale Medical Archives.
A private records-storage company.
Owner?
Margaret had established it before death.
