Chapter 2 - Seven Years Dead

Sophie was found within four minutes.

Claire stood in the mansion’s downstairs library, clutching their crying infant against her chest. She said she had heard the nursery monitor crackle while showering, then discovered Sophie inside a laundry basket outside the bathroom.

Someone had moved the baby.

Claire had assumed Daniel did it.

Daniel had assumed Claire still had Sophie upstairs.

For perhaps six minutes, neither parent knew where their daughter actually was.

Noah did.

Or claimed he did.

“The lady took her.”

Daniel crouched before him.

“What lady?”

“The one under the blanket.”

“But nobody was under there.”

Noah became frustrated. “She was!”

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then at cassette recorder sealed inside an evidence bag.

Police searched the mansion.

No forced entry.

No unknown fingerprints in nursery.

No obvious hiding place.

The recorder was an obsolete Marston K-4 model manufactured more than twenty years earlier.

Daniel recognized it.

His mother owned one.

Margaret Hale.

The woman whose voice he believed he had heard.

Margaret died seven years ago—the same week Noah was born.

That coincidence suddenly felt less innocent.

Margaret had suffered an aggressive illness. Her death was documented. Daniel was present. There was no possibility she had secretly survived.

So the voice was recording.

But Daniel could not explain the hand beneath the blanket.

Noah insisted it had touched him.

Police initially suspected someone had hidden inside nursery and escaped during confusion.

There was nowhere obvious to go.

Then an investigator noticed the crib.

Its placement.

One leg rested over a rectangular seam in the wooden floor.

Daniel had never seen it.

The crib was moved.

Beneath it was a narrow service hatch.

Claire stared at her husband.

“You didn't know that was there?”

“No.”

The mansion belonged to Daniel’s family for generations, but nursery wing had been renovated repeatedly.

The hatch opened into an old utility crawlspace.

Someone could move beneath rooms without entering hallway.

That explained disappearance.

Not identity.

Inside passage investigators found dust disturbed recently.

A flashlight.

A pair of thin gloves.

And an empty infant carrier.

Claire immediately tightened her arms around Sophie.

Then Noah pointed at something deeper inside.

A pale pink ribbon.

Daniel reached for it.

His initials were embroidered on one side.

D.H.

On reverse:

M.H.

Margaret Hale.

His mother.

Claire whispered, “Why would your mother hide something beneath our daughter’s crib?”

Daniel stared at ribbon.

“She didn't.”

“How can you know?”

“Because this nursery didn't exist when she died.”

The renovation happened five years ago.

Two years after Margaret’s death.

Someone had placed her ribbon there afterward.

Then the cassette was examined.

The recording itself was genuine analog audio.

No AI imitation.

No digital manipulation.

Margaret had spoken those words while alive.

But laboratory analysis discovered something far stranger.

The tape contained a date marker written by hand on its inner reel:

NOAH — NIGHT ONE.

Daniel stared at it.

His mother had recorded the message specifically for the night Noah was born.
