Chapter 7 - Claire’s Key

Claire was Sophie's mother and Daniel’s second wife.
She had married Daniel three years earlier.
She also served on board of small archival company inherited through her late father’s legal practice.
Daniel knew she managed records.
He did not know Hale Medical Archives was one of them.
Claire claimed she didn't either.
Company was buried beneath holding entities.
Her father had acquired it during liquidation after Margaret died.
Why?
Margaret specifically arranged sale.
Claire’s father, Andrew Pierce, had been attorney for Bennett family.
Now connection.
Claire's father represented Emma’s parents.
Years later Claire met Daniel through charity foundation.
Was that accidental?
Claire said yes.
Records complicated it.
Before their first meeting, Andrew wrote Claire:
IF YOU EVER MEET DANIEL HALE, DO NOT DISCUSS MARGARET FILES.
Claire had deleted email.
Why?
Because she feared Daniel would think she targeted him.
Again, relationship built around omission.
Daniel's trust cracked.
“Did you know about Emma?”
“Yes.”
“Sensor?”
“Not until after we married.”
“Margaret’s box?”
“I knew documents existed.”
“Woman in nursery?”
“No.”
Police verified Claire was in shower and hallway during intrusion.
She could not have been hidden woman.
But van belonged to company she controlled indirectly.
Fleet logs showed it was checked out using old employee credential:
A. PIERCE.
Andrew Pierce.
Claire’s father.
Except Andrew died two years ago.
Someone used his credential.
Who still knew it?
Claire.
Records manager Susan Cole.
And external auditor:
Evelyn Mercer.
Again Evelyn.
But Evelyn was physically at hospital.
Could lend credential.
Then camera footage showed van driver.
Male.
Face partially visible.
Julian Mercer.
Daniel confronted him.
Julian admitted driving.
He claimed hidden woman ordered him.
“Who?”
He refused.
“Why?”
“Because Margaret made me promise.”
Daniel nearly lost patience.
“My seven-year-old was terrorized in his bedroom.”
Julian lowered eyes.
“That wasn't plan.”
“What was?”
“Put recorder and sensor in crib. Move Sophie safely to Claire. Make sure you found them.”
“Why blanket?”
“To make you look.”
“Who decided to crawl under it?”
Julian said woman improvised.
She wanted Noah to remember her.
“Remember?”
Noah had met her before.
When?
Night he was born.
Impossible for him to consciously remember.
Unless she had remained in his life later.
Daniel asked Noah whether hidden woman’s hand seemed familiar.
Noah whispered:
“She had a burn mark.”
Daniel froze.
A crescent scar across thumb.
He knew it.
Rebecca had that scar.
Noah’s mother.
But Rebecca died seven years ago.
Daniel was there.
Death certificate.
Funeral.
DNA? not usually.
Then Julian whispered:
“The voice you recognized wasn't Margaret’s.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“You heard what you expected to hear.”
The cassette used Margaret’s voice.
But final live whisper—“Daniel”—belonged to someone else.
May you like
Someone Daniel had not heard in seven years.
Rebecca.
