Chapter 8 - The Woman Daniel Buried

Daniel refused to accept it.
Rebecca died after Noah’s birth.
He held her hand.
Doctors pronounced her.
He attended cremation.
Julian forced him to distinguish what he personally witnessed.
He saw Rebecca deteriorate.
He was removed from room during emergency procedure.
Evelyn later told him she had died.
Julian confirmed.
Hospital handled transfer.
Casket at memorial remained closed due Daniel’s grief and medical circumstances.
Cremation certificate existed.
But body identification paperwork contained administrative discrepancy.
Daniel had never noticed.
Name:
Rebecca Hale.
Birth date wrong by one digit.
Could be clerical.
Then crematorium archive showed authorization withdrawn before cremation.
Replacement remains delivered later under same case number.
Whose?
Unknown.
This began to look like fake death, but need logical.
Julian finally explained.
Rebecca suffered catastrophic postpartum cardiac event and was clinically unresponsive for extended period. Initial declaration? Need no false medical death. Better she was incorrectly reported to family due administrative communication while transferred emergently? But Daniel heard death. Could be hospital intentionally told him due protection? Serious.
Rebecca did not die that night.
She survived emergency surgery but had severe neurological injury and prolonged unconsciousness.
Why tell Daniel she died?
Margaret discovered unauthorized sensor trial and feared hospital would manipulate Rebecca as witness? Not enough.
Rebecca had seen sensor and confronted staff before collapse.
Hospital legal officer, Richard Vale, panicked about exposure. He authorized false communication that Rebecca died, claiming transfer would protect patient while internal investigation occurred. Illegal.
Julian went along for hours.
Then Margaret intervened.
By time they planned tell Daniel, Rebecca’s condition worsened and she was transferred to long-term neurological facility under protected identity at her own family’s request? Rebecca unconscious cannot consent. Her estranged mother maybe. Too convoluted.
Could instead Rebecca actually died later after months, making current woman impossible. Need hidden woman could be someone else with scar copied? User wants twists. But final should reveal voice Daniel recognizes as someone he thought died. Could be Rebecca alive, justify via institutional cover-up.
Maybe Rebecca regained consciousness days later and herself chose secrecy after learning Daniel’s family hospital involvement? Yet Daniel should be told. She could be manipulated into believing Daniel approved trial. Yes.
Richard Vale showed Rebecca forged consent bearing Daniel’s signature. She believed Daniel knowingly enrolled Noah and covered it. She refused contact while recovering, entered protective civil-witness arrangement during Bennett litigation. Hospital then concealed her existence to avoid scandal; later she stayed away due shame/fear. This is morally complex.
Daniel asked Julian:
“You let me bury my wife.”
Julian cried.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“At first because Richard said disclosure could jeopardize Rebecca’s treatment and investigation. Later because Rebecca told us not to contact you.”
“Why would she?”
“She thought you signed the consent.”
Daniel had never signed it.
Forgery.
Whose?
Margaret suspected.
Then why Rebecca return now?
Because she recently obtained original consent page proving Daniel’s signature added after scan.
She realized he may have been innocent.
Why nursery stunt instead of front door?
Because she still didn't know whether Daniel knew.
And she wanted test his reaction to sensor.
Manipulative.
Cruel.
Understandable fear, not excused.
Then Noah asked quietly:
“Is my mom alive?”
Daniel couldn't answer without seeing face.
Julian said:
“She was.”
Past tense.
Daniel’s hope collapsed.
“What does that mean?”
Julian looked toward nursery.
“I haven't seen Rebecca in six months.”
Then whose hand was under blanket tonight?
Julian swallowed.
“I thought it was Rebecca.”
May you like
“You drove her here!”
“I drove someone wearing her coat.”
