Laura had not fled.
She went to Hale Foundation board meeting carrying sensor.
She intended force disclosure before acquisition vote.
Daniel reached meeting in time.
No dramatic attack.
No kidnapping.
Just wealthy attorneys attempting to prevent an angry mother from entering private session.
Daniel let her in.
Laura placed sensor on table.
“This was attached to my daughter without my permission.”
Board went silent.
Then independent engineer examined it.
Serial intact.
TH-RM-002.
Thomas Hale.
Rose Mercer.
Both initials built into prototype designation.
Physical proof Rose’s authorship existed before patent filing.
That changed ownership dispute.
Then sensor memory surprised everyone.
Old devices stored limited calibration logs.
Emma’s contained timestamped configuration signed by:
MERCER_R.
Rose Mercer had configured it years before Emma was born? Device old stock. Yes.
Thus Rose unquestionably contributed.
Why did hospital deny prototype use?
Because they reused old device in unauthorized validation program.
Then Daniel demanded acquisition paused.
Board resisted.
He held significant influence but not unilateral power.
Laura threatened public release.
Daniel persuaded independent review instead.
Not to bury.
To authenticate before accusation.
Rebecca agreed.
Evelyn recused due financial conflict.
Good.
Then one more file surfaced from sensor.
A calibration note:
SUBJECT N-01 COMPARISON REQUIRES SIBLING BASELINE.
Sibling?
Noah had no sibling then.
Could “sibling” mean device pair? Engineer cautioned terminology.
Don't jump.
Margaret had circled phrase in notebook:
THIS IS WHY REBECCA PANICKED.
Rebecca explained.
Before delivery, hospital researcher asked whether she would consent to future sibling follow-up if Noah had another biological sibling.
She refused.
Yet form later showed yes.
Forgery.
Years later Sophie was born—but Sophie is Claire’s child, Noah’s half-sister through Daniel, still sibling baseline genetically paternal. Could someone now target Sophie for follow-up? That explains sensor planted in her crib perhaps beyond stunt.
Rebecca and Laura claimed they planted sensor merely as evidence.
But serial found in Sophie’s crib was 0713, not TH-RM-002. It may be newer derivative.
Engineer reexamined.
It was manufactured only eighteen months ago.
Not old prototype.
Someone had built new device using same design.
Who?
Hale neonatal division.
So nursery stunt accidentally exposed ongoing research.
Was Sophie enrolled?
Daniel demanded records.
No.
But internal proposal listed:
FAMILIAL LONGITUDINAL VALIDATION — HALE LINE.
No names.
Then Claire went pale.
During pregnancy, she had consented to standard newborn monitoring study.
She never knew connected to Thomas patent.
Sophie may have been legally enrolled under broad consent—but disclosure inadequate.
The crib device might have been assigned to Sophie legitimately at hospital and somehow came home in equipment? Yet Rebecca planted it? She said she obtained from archive. Need consistency.
Rebecca admitted sensor she planted came from sealed research cabinet, not Thomas box.
She believed it old.
It was new.
Someone had deliberately placed new device among old evidence.
Why?
To make investigators find current program.
Who had access?
Michael Trent.
Missing consultant.
Then Michael called Daniel.
“I wasn't paid to destroy Thomas box.”
“What were you paid to do?”
“To make sure you found the new sensor.”
“Why?”
“Because I couldn't report it internally.”
Whistleblower.
He had been helping indirectly.
Then who paid him?
“No one.”
But bank showed $240k.
Michael said payment wasn't consulting fee.
“It was severance.”
