Chapter 1 - That’s Not My Baby Sister

Noah’s scream tore Daniel out of sleep.
“Dad! Come here!”
Daniel ran barefoot down the dark hallway toward the nursery. When he reached the doorway, seven-year-old Noah was standing beside the white crib, crying so hard he could barely breathe. The warm bedside lamp illuminated his pale face and trembling hand.
He was pointing into the crib.
Daniel grabbed his shoulders. “What happened?”
Noah’s eyes never left the pale pink blanket.
“That’s not my baby sister.”
Daniel stared at him.
Three-month-old Sophie had been asleep less than an hour earlier. Daniel himself had placed her in the crib after her final bottle while his wife, Claire, showered upstairs.
“Where’s Sophie?”
Noah only pointed.
The shape beneath the blanket was roughly the right size.
But something about it was wrong.
Too long.
Too still.
Daniel approached carefully. Noah clung to the back of his shirt.
Daniel reached for the blanket.
Noah suddenly grabbed his wrist.
“It already knew my name.”
Daniel turned sharply.
“What?”
Noah’s crying stopped for one terrified second.
“It said Noah.”
Then the shape moved.
Barely.
Daniel pulled the blanket down several inches.
He stopped.
Noah couldn't see what his father saw.
But he saw Daniel’s face lose every trace of color.
Then a woman whispered from beneath the blanket.
“Daniel…”
Daniel’s fingers locked around the fabric.
He knew that voice.
Impossible.
The last time he heard it, he was standing beside a hospital bed seven years earlier.
“That voice died seven years ago.”
Noah backed toward the door.
A hand rose beneath the blanket and pressed against the fabric.
Then one finger extended.
Not toward Noah.
Toward Daniel.
Daniel recoiled so violently that he lost his balance and fell against the nursery floor.
Noah screamed.
Daniel looked toward the crib again—
and the blanket collapsed.
The shape was gone.
Daniel lunged forward and ripped the blanket away.
There was no woman.
No stranger.
No Sophie.
Only an old black cassette recorder sitting in the center of the empty crib.
Its reels were still turning.
Then Daniel heard Claire screaming from downstairs.
He ran.
On the nursery floor behind him, the cassette clicked to its next recording.

A woman’s voice whispered:
“If Daniel hears this, don't let him find the baby.”
