Chapter 3 - The First Baby

Daniel had never told Noah much about the night of his birth.
There seemed no reason.
Noah was born prematurely during a chaotic winter storm. Claire was not his mother; Daniel’s first wife, Rebecca, died during complications shortly after delivery.
Margaret died three days later.
Within one week Daniel lost his wife and mother and became sole parent to a newborn.
He buried most memories beneath work and survival.
Now Margaret’s tape was forcing them back.
Police digitized the cassette.
The first message was ordinary.
Margaret speaking softly:
“Daniel, if Rebecca is still asleep, don't wake her. She needs rest.”
Then:
“If Noah cries differently after midnight, call Dr. Mercer.”
Daniel froze.
Dr. Julian Mercer had been Rebecca’s obstetric consultant.
Retired now.
The recording continued:
“And if anyone tells you the nursery record is wrong, believe them.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“What nursery record?”
“I don't know.”
Then came phrase they had heard:
“If Daniel hears this, don't let him find the baby.”
But audio engineer discovered cut.
Two separate sentences had been spliced.
Original:
“If Daniel hears this before I explain everything, don't let him find the baby records alone.”
Someone removed “records alone.”
The frightening instruction had been manufactured from Margaret’s real voice.
Whoever staged crib wanted Daniel to believe dead mother was warning someone to hide Sophie.
Why?
Then Noah whispered:
“She said more than cassette.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
“When she was under blanket.”
“There wasn't a woman under there when I pulled it off.”
“She whispered before you came.”
“What did she say?”
Noah hesitated.
“She said, ‘You look like him.’”
“Like who?”
“She didn't say.”
Then Noah described hand.
A silver ring on middle finger.
Not Margaret’s.
Daniel remembered another woman who wore one.
Dr. Evelyn Mercer.
Julian Mercer’s daughter.
She had been a young medical resident when Noah was born.
Daniel had not seen her in seven years.
Police located Evelyn.
She was not missing.
She lived twenty minutes away.
And when officers arrived, she was wearing a silver ring.
Daniel demanded explanation.
Evelyn came voluntarily.
She denied entering mansion.
Then saw pink ribbon.
Her confidence disappeared.
“Where did you find that?”
“Under Sophie’s crib.”
Evelyn whispered:
“Then someone opened Margaret’s box.”
“What box?”
Evelyn looked at Noah.
“The one your mother left for him.”
Daniel stared.
“My mother left Noah something?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
May you like
Evelyn answered:
“Proof that Rebecca gave birth to two babies that night.”
