Chapter 9 - The Nanny Test

Olivia Crane was located in Boston.
She admitted recommending Rachel.
She also admitted knowing Daniel Moore.
That connection changed everything.
Daniel had worked short-term cybersecurity contract at Northstar liquidation.
Olivia met him there.
Both became suspicious that retired systems remained active.
Daniel learned Bennett nursery camera was connected.
Olivia knew Rachel was seeking live-in nanny job.
They decided placing Rachel inside house might help identify unauthorized access.
Rachel was furious.
Again.
Her brother had not simply used her after USB appeared.
Her employment itself had been influenced.
“You put me in that house because you wanted someone inside.”
Daniel said:
“I thought Vanessa was covering financial fraud.”
“You didn't tell me.”
“No.”
“You let me care for a baby inside a house you believed was being illegally monitored.”
“I didn't think Sophie was in danger.”
Rachel looked at him.
“That sentence should haunt you.”
It did.
Olivia insisted she never manipulated Claire video.
She had old access to Melissa Stone’s editing workstation, but no current copy.
Forensics confirmed manipulated video had been exported recently from virtual image cloned from that workstation.
Someone possessed archived system image.
Daniel had one.
His face changed when told.
“I used it to recover old Northstar presentation files.”
“Who else had access?”
“Sarah Mills.”
Sarah.
The camera installer.
USB creator.
Cybersecurity contractor.
Sarah admitted having virtual image.
But her copy had been stolen.
Not physically.
Cloud storage compromised.
By whom?
Access logs traced to Lab 17.
Martin Shaw’s relay.
But Martin denied downloading image.
His credentials were shared with another account.
Again Northstar’s terrible access controls created ambiguity.
Then Detective Grant stepped away from suspects and reconstructed goals.
Someone wanted:
Vanessa frightened.
Rachel blamed.
Ethan emotionally reactive.
USB discovered.
Northstar reopened.
Those goals conflicted.
If mastermind wanted hide Northstar, why ensure USB reached Ethan?
Maybe blackmailer wanted expose company while destroying Vanessa.
Who hated Vanessa and had access to Claire video?
Claire’s former attorney David Mercer revealed another person.
Claire had younger colleague:
Julia Reed.
Compliance associate.
Julia helped Claire gather evidence.
After Claire died, Julia accused Vanessa of betraying her.
Julia was fired during restructuring.
Current job:
pediatric clinic records administrator.
The same clinic Sophie visited.
Julia could have placed USB in diaper bag?
Camera showed Daniel did.
But Julia could have accessed Sophie records and known appointment.
Could she have sent Vanessa blackmail?
Police searched her devices with consent.
No.
Julia had received anonymous messages too.
One:
VANESSA WILL DESTROY ANOTHER BENNETT IF NOBODY STOPS HER.
Attached photo showed Vanessa holding Sophie.
Julia forwarded it to David Mercer but did nothing else.
Who sent?
Same anonymization service used to blackmail Vanessa.
Now blackmailer was manipulating both sides.
Then service provider responded to warrant.
Account creation payment came from prepaid card purchased at grocery store.
Camera footage showed buyer.
Not Martin.
Not Caleb.
Not Sarah.
Not Julia.
Not Daniel.

It was Anna.
The maid who had saved Sophie.
