Chapter 6 - The Missing File
The missing file was not on USB.
Daniel had searched.
Sarah had searched.
Police forensic team searched.
Only reference:
C-27.
Claire’s compliance archive listed files C-01 through C-26.
No C-27.
Vanessa denied knowing it.
Rachel no longer believed reflexive denials.
But Ethan noticed Vanessa reacted differently to USB than to C-27.
She feared drive because it proved she had accepted money and concealed Claire’s complaint.
C-27 seemed genuinely unfamiliar.
Then Sophie’s pediatric records added another clue.
Three weeks earlier Vanessa had accompanied Rachel and Sophie to routine appointment because Ethan was traveling.
Rachel remembered Vanessa leaving waiting room for ten minutes.
Clinic network logs showed somebody plugged external device into reception workstation during same period.
No proof Vanessa.
Security footage showed her standing at coffee machine.
Another person used workstation.
A man wearing maintenance badge.
Identified:
Caleb Shaw.
Son of former Northstar executive Martin Shaw.
Caleb had worked IT security.
He had no legitimate reason at clinic.
Police interviewed him.
Caleb admitted accessing workstation.
He claimed he was searching for unauthorized Northstar software that might still be connected to Sophie’s records.
That explanation sounded absurd until investigators found clinic had once used Northstar monitoring platform.
But why Sophie?
Caleb said Claire had created compliance trigger tied to Bennett family account.
If Northstar service credentials accessed Sophie-related device, system would generate audit package.
C-27.
Ethan stared.
“So C-27 isn't a file Claire wrote?”
“No. It’s automated evidence package.”
“Evidence of what?”
“Whoever kept using retired credentials after company settlement.”
That meant somebody accessing nursery through Lab 17 may have accidentally generated C-27.
Where would package go?
Claire had configured dead-drop archive before she died.
Recipient unknown.
Then Caleb said something that changed Rachel’s understanding.
“I didn't put USB in diaper bag.”
“We know.”
“But I know why Daniel did.”
Daniel stiffened.
Caleb continued:
“He wanted Vanessa to see it.”
Rachel turned to brother.
“You told me you were hiding it from her.”
Daniel admitted he expected Rachel would ask household about unknown USB.
He wanted observe reactions.
“You used me as bait.”
“Yes.”
Rachel stood.
“Get out.”
“Rachel—”
“Get out.”
Daniel left.
Protective intentions did not excuse manipulation.
Then Detective Grant asked Vanessa directly:
“When you saw Rachel holding USB tonight, what did you think was on it?”
Vanessa finally answered.
“Video.”
“What video?”
Vanessa looked at Sophie’s empty crib.
“Something that would make Ethan believe I had been hurting Sophie for months.”
“Were you?”
“No.”
“Tonight you did.”
Vanessa closed eyes.
“Yes.”
The iron incident was real.
Not fabricated.
Not misunderstood.
But Vanessa insisted tonight was first time she deliberately injured Sophie.
“Why?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Because somebody told me Rachel had already replaced the camera footage.”
“With what?”
“A video of me doing exactly what Ethan walked in believing Rachel had done.”
Detective Grant stared.
“You're saying someone predicted tonight?”
“No.”
Vanessa shook.
“They told me if I didn't make the camera record something real, they would release something worse.”
“What?”

“A video that would make it look like Claire wanted Sophie dead.”
