Chapter 11 - Charles Bennett

Charles had met Vanessa.
Many times.
Ethan’s father admitted it immediately.
He had disliked Claire’s involvement with Northstar and believed corporate dispute was worsening her health.
After Claire died, Charles wanted all related records destroyed or settled so Ethan could move forward.
He contacted Vanessa privately.
He encouraged her accept $48,000 agreement.
He also paid Peter Lang to “clean up” estate paperwork.
Not destroy evidence, he insisted.
Organize it.
Peter turned that vague mandate into recurring billing.
But Charles denied sending “DO IT NOW.”
Phone records showed his number had been spoofed.
Vanessa had saved Charles as C.B., so spoofed message displayed initials.
Who knew contact?
Someone who had seen Vanessa’s phone or contact backups.
Peter Lang managed her household device migration when she moved into mansion.
He knew.
Police seized Peter’s laptop.
Deleted browser artifacts linked to anonymization service.
Not enough alone.
Then prepaid account login token appeared in password manager.
Peter confessed partially.
He had sent messages.
Why?
Not to hurt Sophie.
He wanted Vanessa frightened into creating evidence that would justify removing Rachel from household.
Why Rachel?
Because Rachel had started asking about invoices.
She noticed Peter charging estate for nursery security maintenance that Sarah Mills had actually done privately.
Rachel asked Ethan’s assistant whether duplicate billing normal.
Question reached Peter.
Peter realized Rachel might expose his $72,000 fake preservation charges.
He searched her background.
Found Daniel’s Northstar connection.
Panicked.
He concluded Rachel and Daniel were investigating him.
He decided get Rachel fired.
He knew Vanessa feared Claire files.
He sent manipulated Claire clip.
He told Vanessa stage camera incident showing Rachel aggressive.
But did he instruct Vanessa hurt Sophie?
“No.”
Recovered messages confirmed:
PLACE IRON ON TOWEL NEAR CRIB.
MAKE RACHEL THINK YOU’RE BEING CARELESS.
WHEN SHE GRABS YOU, CAMERA WILL SHOW HER ATTACKING HOUSEHOLD MEMBER.
Vanessa escalated drastically.
She deliberately pressed iron against Sophie to guarantee Rachel’s explosive reaction.
Peter had created malicious setup.
Vanessa chose child abuse.
Both culpable differently.
Then why tell Vanessa “DO IT NOW” when Rachel approached?
Peter watched hallway cameras remotely through family-office access.
He timed setup.
Why camera recording missing?
Peter deleted main segment afterward.
Why?
Once Vanessa actually hurt Sophie, plan became criminal disaster.
He tried erase evidence.
But he didn't know diagnostic snapshots remained.
Why did nursery lose power after Rachel raised USB?
Peter remotely cut smart-home circuit hoping force confusion and retrieve drive.
He entered downstairs study during blackout.
But police arrived before he could reach nursery.
Breaking glass downstairs?
Peter knocked over display cabinet while moving through dark room.
No mysterious intruder.
Why was Vanessa terrified of USB?
Because she believed it contained nursery footage plus Northstar financial evidence.
She did not know exact contents.
Why did Rachel have it?
Daniel placed it as evidence package after Sarah and Olivia helped gather Northstar logs.
Why did Peter know about USB?
He saw Rachel ask Vanessa about it nine days earlier through hallway camera audio.
Then he searched Rachel’s room.
USB wasn't there.
He assumed she carried it.
He decided force her out before she could deliver it to Ethan.
Central structure was becoming clear.
But one thing remained.
USB contained file named:
SOPHIE_FINAL.
Encrypted separately.
Daniel said he didn't create it.
Sarah didn't.
Olivia didn't.
Forensic metadata showed file had been added before Daniel received drive.
Creator:
