Chapter 3 - Claire’s Last Request
Claire Bennett had known she might not live to meet her daughter.
She was diagnosed with aggressive cardiac disease during pregnancy. Doctors recommended early intervention that endangered pregnancy.
Claire chose a medically supervised compromise, but her condition deteriorated.
Sophie was delivered later through a gestational carrier using embryo created from Ethan and Claire years earlier.
Independent records confirmed it.
Sophie was biologically Ethan and Claire’s daughter.
No maternity mystery.
No swapped embryo.
No hidden paternity.
Claire died months before Sophie’s birth.
Before her death she recorded instructions for Ethan.
Most were ordinary.
Which family photographs Sophie should have.
Which songs Claire loved.
Which childhood books she wanted read.
One request involved Vanessa.
“If Vanessa ever needs somewhere to stay, help her. She helped me when I needed someone.”
Ethan honored it.
Vanessa moved into guest wing after losing apartment following business dispute.
But Claire never said Vanessa should care for Sophie.
Ethan had allowed access because he trusted Claire’s judgment.
Now that trust looked dangerous.
Detective Grant investigated Vanessa.
No violent criminal history.
No child-care background.
Former executive assistant at a medical-device company called Northstar Pediatric Systems.
That mattered because USB manufacturer carried Northstar logo.
Rachel had never noticed.
Northstar made neonatal monitoring equipment.
Claire had worked there too.
Not as executive.
As financial compliance analyst.
Ethan knew that.
What he didn't know was Claire had filed internal complaint three months before her death.
Complaint contents sealed during corporate settlement.
Vanessa claimed she knew nothing.
Police found email proving otherwise.
Claire to Vanessa:
I NEED YOU TO STOP MOVING THE TEST ACCOUNTS. IF ETHAN EVER SEES WHAT THEY WERE USED FOR, THIS WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING.
Vanessa replied:
THEN DON'T LET HIM SEE.
Ethan read email twice.
“What test accounts?”
Vanessa refused answer without attorney.
The USB suddenly looked less like evidence of nursery assault and more like something Claire had hidden before death.
But timing made no sense.
Claire died eleven months earlier.
USB appeared nine days ago.
Who had carried it all that time?
Forensics recovered USB metadata without decrypting files.
Three folders.
NURSERY.
NORTHSTAR.
BENNETT.
Most recent modification:
ten days ago.
Someone alive had updated it.
Then examiner discovered encrypted container included one unprotected thumbnail accidentally cached.
A still image.
The Bennett nursery.
Same gold crib.
Same camera.
But photograph was taken before Sophie ever came home.
Rachel stared.
“How?”
Ethan knew.
The nursery had been completed two months before Sophie’s birth.
Someone had been testing security camera.
In image, Vanessa stood beside empty crib.
And beside her stood another woman.
Face turned away.
Ethan recognized champagne-colored coat.
“Claire?”
Impossible.
Claire had died five months before nursery existed.
Rachel leaned closer.
“No.”
The woman was not Claire.

But she was wearing Claire’s coat.
And she appeared to be installing the same black camera that later lost nine minutes.
