Chapter 2 - Nine Missing Minutes
Sophie was taken to the hospital immediately.
Her injury was painful but treatable. Doctors expected her hand to heal without permanent functional damage.
That did nothing to lessen what had happened.
Ethan remained beside his daughter while police interviewed everyone separately.
Rachel required treatment too.
Ethan could barely look at her afterward.
He had acted on Vanessa’s accusation without asking a single question.
The broken clothing rack had been photographed.
So had the iron.
So had the scorched towel.
Ethan could not undo his own violence by discovering he had been manipulated.
When Detective Laura Grant asked Rachel for the USB, Rachel refused to hand it directly to Ethan.
She gave it to police.
“Make a forensic copy first.”
Vanessa heard that from hallway.
Her hands began trembling.
The nursery camera became immediate problem.
Its local system showed recording until 7:41 p.m.
Then nine minutes were missing.
Recording resumed at 7:50.
Rachel entered nursery at approximately 7:46.
Ethan entered seconds later.
The most important moments fell inside missing interval.
Vanessa insisted she had not touched system.
Rachel insisted she had.
Neither could prove it yet.
But the USB might.
Except forensic examiner found something unexpected.
The drive was encrypted.
Rachel did not know password.
Ethan stared at her.
“You told me to see what was on it.”
“I know what I was told is on it.”
“By who?”
Rachel hesitated.
Nine days earlier, she had found USB inside Sophie’s diaper bag after returning from pediatric appointment.
It was wrapped in folded paper.
One sentence:
KEEP THIS AWAY FROM VANESSA. IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO SOPHIE, GIVE IT TO ETHAN.
No signature.
Rachel had almost given it to Ethan immediately.
Then she made mistake.
She asked Vanessa whether anyone had misplaced a USB.
Vanessa’s reaction was tiny.
A pause.
A glance.
Then:
“No.”
That was when Rachel kept it.
“Why didn't you tell me?” Ethan asked.
“Because I didn't know whether it was real, a prank, or something somebody planted to get me fired.”
“You should have told me.”
“Yes.”
Rachel did not defend delay.
Then Ethan asked the question hanging over everything.
“Who is Vanessa to Sophie?”
Rachel looked at him.
“You tell me.”
Vanessa Cole had lived in mansion for four months.
Ethan had introduced her to staff as “family.”
Never sister.
Never aunt.
Never girlfriend.
Never cousin.
Just family.
Rachel had assumed everyone else knew.
Apparently nobody did.
Detective Grant asked Ethan privately.
Ethan answered:
“Vanessa was my late wife Claire’s closest friend.”
“Is she related to you?”
“No.”
“To Sophie?”
“No.”
“Then why is she living in your home?”
Ethan looked toward hospital room.
“Because Claire asked me to trust her.”
Claire Bennett had died eleven months earlier.
