Claire’s attorney David Mercer maintained encrypted evidence archive.

Timestamp reflected migration, not creation.
SOPHIE_FINAL had been created before Claire died.
Mercer recognized filename.
Claire gave him sealed instruction:
Do not release until Ethan asks specifically whether Northstar matter affected Sophie.
Ethan was furious.
“You had a file about my daughter for almost a year?”
“At Claire’s legal instruction.”
“She was unborn.”
“Yes.”
“What did Northstar have to do with her?”
Mercer requested court guidance before opening because file contained medical and corporate information.
Authorization came.
Everyone expected devastating revelation.
It was simpler.
Claire had used Northstar employee fertility benefit years earlier to pay part of embryo-storage fees.
When she discovered financial misconduct, she worried company might later claim employee benefit records were part disputed account data.
She created file documenting:
Sophie’s embryo storage was legitimate.
No Northstar research involved.
No company owned or controlled biological material.
No unauthorized testing occurred.
Ethan and Claire retained full parental rights.
Clinic independent from Northstar.
Claire wanted protect future daughter from exactly kind of conspiracy people might invent if corporate scandal surfaced.
Her recorded message:
“Ethan, if you’re watching this, Sophie is yours and mine. Nothing Northstar did changes that. Please don't let their paperwork turn our daughter into evidence.”
Ethan cried.
Rachel turned away to give him privacy.
The file contained no secret twin.
No altered paternity.
No experiment.
No inheritance.
Just mother anticipating administrative mess.
But appended document mattered.
Claire named people she trusted:
David Mercer.
Sarah Mills.
Julia Reed.
And one she did not:
Peter Lang.
Claire had noticed Peter billing family office for work he did not perform even before her death.
She told Ethan once.
Ethan had forgotten amid medical crisis.
Peter knew she suspected him.

Then Daniel began investigating.

Claire viewed her as compromised, not evil.

Ethan had confused compassion with authority.

A text file Daniel had never noticed:

Created two days before incident.
Rachel’s blood ran cold.
Peter had planned iron setup.
The file listed camera angles, towel placement and Rachel’s likely route into nursery.
But final line read:
V MUST NEVER TOUCH CHILD.
Peter had known risk.
He wrote boundary.
Then deliberately created situation around infant anyway.
