Northstar Pediatric Systems was not secretly experimenting on babies.
That theory appeared online within hours after news leaked, and investigators rejected it quickly.
The company manufactured infant oxygen monitors, temperature sensors and hospital tracking software.
Claire’s complaint concerned billing.
Northstar had been recording demo-device placements as paid hospital deployments to inflate adoption numbers before acquisition talks.
Potential securities and contract fraud.
Claire discovered approximately $6.4 million in questionable revenue recognition.
Vanessa worked for executive vice president Martin Shaw.
Claire believed Vanessa had moved test accounts between spreadsheets at Shaw’s direction.
Vanessa insisted she thought changes were temporary reconciliation.
Claire disagreed.
Then Claire became seriously ill.
Her complaint stalled.
Northstar eventually sold division.
Internal settlement corrected several million dollars in revenue.
No one told Ethan.
Why would nursery camera connect to Northstar?
Because Vanessa reused retired Northstar monitoring gateway to create remote nursery access.
Sarah’s logs proved.
Why use Claire’s dead credentials?
Vanessa said she didn't.
Technical audit showed CBENNETT_ARCHIVE was service account named after Claire during internal investigation.
It was not literally Claire’s personal login.
Someone kept it active after her death.
That reduced one mystery.
But who used it?
USB logs listed connections from three devices.
Sarah’s laptop.
Vanessa’s tablet.
Unknown device tagged:
NPS-LAB-17.
Northstar Lab 17.
That lab had closed eighteen months earlier.
Daniel had visited old facility while investigating.
He found retired server still online through acquisition company network.
Someone was using it as relay to access Bennett nursery.
Why?
Ethan demanded:
“Was someone watching Sophie?”
“Yes,” Daniel said.
“Who?”
“I couldn't identify them.”
Vanessa’s attorney interrupted.
“She didn't know about Lab 17.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Then why did she turn camera off?”
Vanessa finally admitted she had seen strange connection alerts.
She feared someone from Northstar was watching house.
Instead of telling Ethan, she unplugged camera repeatedly.
“Why hide that?”
“Because then Ethan would ask why I installed unauthorized system.”
“And why did you?”
Vanessa looked toward Ethan.
“Claire asked me to.”
Again Claire.
Always Claire.
Ethan requested original communications.
Vanessa produced old voice message.
Claire’s voice:
“If Sophie ever comes home and I'm not there, please make sure somebody watches the nursery. Ethan trusts people too easily.”
Authentic.
But Claire never asked Vanessa to install Northstar-linked camera.
Vanessa had expanded request on her own.
Then USB financial folder revealed stranger detail.
A Northstar vendor paid Vanessa $48,000 over six months after Claire died.
Vendor:
Blue Meadow Consulting.
Vanessa called it severance.
No employment contract supported that.
Ethan stared.
“Were you being paid to watch Sophie?”
Vanessa looked genuinely offended.
“No.”
“Then what was money for?”
She hesitated.
“To keep Claire’s files closed.”
Silence.
Vanessa had accepted money.
Not to harm Sophie.
To keep Ethan from discovering what Claire had uncovered.
Then Daniel opened another USB file.
A photograph of signed agreement.
Vanessa Cole received $48,000.
In return she agreed surrender all remaining copies of Claire Bennett’s Northstar records.
But USB existed.
Someone had kept a copy.
