Chapter 7 - The Video of Claire
The alleged Claire video existed.
Vanessa had received it forty-eight hours before nursery incident.
She had deleted message.
Cloud backup recovered copy.
Claire appeared in hospital bed months before death.
Her voice was weak.
“If the baby survives, don't let Ethan bring her home.”
Then clip ended.
Ethan nearly collapsed watching.
But forensic analysis found edit.
Original video was longer.
Claire had said:
“If the baby survives the embryo screening, don't let Ethan bring her home until the nursery electrical fault is repaired.”
Someone removed middle and ending.
No request to harm Sophie.
No rejection of daughter.
A manipulated clip.
Sender told Vanessa:
WE HAVE MORE.
MAKE THE NURSERY CAMERA RECORD SOMETHING THAT PROVES RACHEL IS UNSAFE, OR ETHAN SEES WHAT CLAIRE REALLY THOUGHT OF HIS CHILD.
Why would Vanessa obey?
Because sender also threatened release evidence of $48,000 settlement and her role moving Northstar accounts.
She panicked.
But her response made little sense.
“Why hurt Sophie?” Detective Grant asked.
Vanessa stared at floor.
“I wasn't supposed to.”
“What were you supposed to do?”
“Create scene.”
Instructions told Vanessa place warm—not hot—iron near Sophie’s blanket, then provoke argument with Rachel in camera view.
Vanessa heated iron too long.
When Rachel entered unexpectedly, Vanessa lost control.
She pressed it against Sophie’s hand.
There was no excuse.
Blackmail might explain fear.
It did not transform deliberate act into accident.
Vanessa began crying.
“I wanted Rachel to rush me. I wanted camera to show her attacking me.”
“So you injured infant to strengthen setup.”
Vanessa said nothing.
That silence was answer.
Rachel had indeed kicked Vanessa when she saw Sophie being hurt.
Vanessa intended use reaction to frame Rachel as violent nanny.
Then Ethan arrived before Vanessa could control narrative.
She immediately blamed Rachel.
Who sent instructions?
Anonymous encrypted account.
But attached manipulated Claire video contained export metadata.
Editor initials:
MS.
Martin Shaw?
He denied.
Caleb Shaw?
Initials wrong.
Sarah Mills?
Possible.
Sarah denied editing.
Forensic workstation fingerprint pointed to old Northstar editing suite assigned to:
MELISSA STONE.
Former corporate communications director.
Melissa now ran consulting firm.
She admitted creating clips years earlier for legal-review presentations, but denied manipulated version.
Her old workstation had been sold at liquidation.
Chain unclear.
Then C-27 surfaced.
Automated archive had been delivered to Claire’s former attorney, David Mercer.
He had not opened because account dormant and attachment quarantined.
With legal authorization, investigators retrieved it.
C-27 contained connection history from Lab 17.
And one short screen capture.
Someone remotely viewing Bennett nursery camera.
Timestamp three weeks earlier.
Reflection in Lab 17 monitor showed part of watcher’s face.
Male.
Older.
Silver hair.
Ethan recognized him.
Martin Shaw.
Vanessa’s former boss.
The man who paid her to surrender Claire’s files.
But Martin Shaw had a reason to watch nursery that had nothing to do with Sophie herself.
On desk beside monitor was a folder.
