Chapter 8 - The Label Before Lily

A label predating conception looked terrifying.

It was not prophecy.

New Dawn generated placeholder labels when patients began treatment cycles.

Emma and Ethan had already selected name Lily if they had daughter.

Emma apparently told nurse.

So test label existed.

No secret older Lily.

No clone.

No replaced child.

But back of label had handwritten initials:

J.C.

Jonathan Cross.

He had used Bennett placeholder during software testing without permission.

Rachel reported him.

Why target Bennetts?

At time they were not famous beyond local business family.

Jonathan’s explanation in old HR file:

Random test case.

Rachel disagreed.

She wrote:

HE SELECTED BENNETT BECAUSE OF THOMAS.

Thomas Bennett—Ethan’s father—had invested in New Dawn parent company.

Now connection mattered.

Jonathan may have been testing whether Bennett family records could be manipulated without audit alerts.

Why?

Old emails showed Thomas requested clinic strengthen privacy controls after celebrity data breach.

Jonathan resented scrutiny.

He created unauthorized demonstrations showing vulnerabilities.

Bennett placeholder became proof-of-concept.

He was fired.

Years later, after New Dawn acquisition, he worked for security vendor servicing Bennett mansion.

Coincidence? Perhaps not.

Jonathan had told colleague:

“They eventually hired me to protect same family that got me fired.”

Resentment.

But he died before current bowl incident.

Could he have left system enabling someone else?

Yes.

Peter discovered hidden maintenance camera installed in kitchen by Jonathan during security upgrade.

Not malicious initially—temporary diagnostic camera.

Should have been removed.

It remained active through local recorder.

That was camera capturing Claire.

Who accessed recorder recently?

Physical cabinet in security room.

Four people had key:

Peter.

Marcus guard.

Ethan.

Emma.

Emma’s key remained among stored belongings.

Unless stolen.

Blue B-14 key? No, different.

Marcus admitted someone had paid him $2,000 to leave security room unlocked previous night.

Who?

Cash envelope.

No name.

He thought private investigator hired by Ethan.

Why?

Envelope included copy of Ethan signature.

Forged.

Marcus was suspended and investigated.

Someone entered security room during fourteen-minute nursery outage.

Mansion hallway camera captured figure in maintenance jacket.

Face hidden.

Height/build female or smaller male.

Then Lily’s bedroom camera came back.

At 2:14 a.m., Lily was asleep.

On bedside table appeared object not there before.

Small chocolate-wrapped candy.

Lily woke later and apparently saw visitor before camera returned.

She called visitor “Mommy.”

Who did visitor resemble?

Child interviewer asked Lily to draw hair.

Lily chose brown.

Emma had red-brown? In this story Emma can be brunette? We haven't described. Better Emma was brunette. Then many.

Lily said:

“Mommy had Mommy’s necklace.”

Ethan knew necklace.

Emma wore gold pendant shaped like small crescent.

It disappeared after death along with blue key.

Who had hospital belongings?

Authorized representative with illegible signature.

Hospital footage finally arrived.

A woman collected them.

Face visible.

Claire.

Ethan stared.

Claire had lied again.

She took Emma’s key.

And Emma’s necklace.
