Chapter 3 - B-14 and B-15

Keys did not belong mansion.
Manufacturer identified them as locker keys produced for St. Catherine Women’s Medical Center.
Emma had died there.
B-14 and B-15 corresponded to two secure patient-property lockers in old maternity wing.
Hospital had renovated wing months earlier.
Most lockers removed.
B-14 and B-15 remained in basement storage.
Police opened them under hospital authorization.
B-14 was empty.
B-15 contained envelope.
Addressed:
ETHAN BENNETT.
Ethan wanted open immediately.
Maya stopped him until photographed and logged.
Inside:
a photograph of Emma.
Alive.
Taken approximately two months before death.
She stood beside Claire.
They were smiling.
That shocked Ethan because Claire always claimed she barely knew Emma.
On back Emma had written:
IF I’M WRONG, DESTROY EVERYTHING.
IF I’M RIGHT, CLAIRE KNOWS WHERE TO START.
Ethan confronted Claire.
She finally admitted relationship.
Emma hired her privately eleven months before death.
For what?
“Financial investigation.”
Into whom?
“You.”
Ethan stared.
Claire explained Emma suspected someone was using Ethan’s identity to authorize transfers from Bennett Family Holdings.
Approximately $3.2 million had moved through temporary accounts.
Most returned within days.
Pattern resembled liquidity manipulation rather than theft.
Emma didn't know whether Ethan was involved.
She hired Claire, former forensic accountant.
“Why hide that after she died?”
“Because she made me promise.”
“Emma is dead.”
“And whatever she found might be why.”
Maya interrupted.
“No evidence currently indicates Emma’s death was homicide.”
Emma died after car accident complicated by internal injuries.
Driver of other vehicle was charged with reckless driving.
No connection to Bennetts found.
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
Then why insinuate?
Because Emma herself had been afraid.
Weeks before crash she created emergency protocol.
If something happened, Claire was to locate “B-series.”
What were B-series?
Keys.
Emma used hospital lockers because she volunteered on maternity charity board and knew old storage area scheduled for closure.
She hid documents there.
B-14 had held first packet.
Claire retrieved it after Emma’s death.
“What was inside?”
“A warning.”
“About me?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Claire looked toward Lily.
“About her.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“My daughter?”
“Not Lily herself.”
“Then say it.”
“Her records.”
What records?
Claire refused without attorney.
Maya warned withholding evidence could worsen position.
Claire finally answered:
“Emma found two birth certificates.”
Ethan almost laughed.
“That isn't possible.”
“Both were for Lily Bennett.”
Same birth date.
Same hospital.
Same father:
Ethan Bennett.
But mother field differed.
One named Emma Bennett.
The other named:
Claire Morgan.
Claire’s full legal name.
Ethan stared at her.
“You're saying you're Lily’s mother?”
Claire immediately shook head.
“No.”
“Then why does certificate say you are?”
May you like
“I've spent eleven months trying to find out.”
And suddenly Lily’s words—“Mommy put it in there”—became far more dangerous.
