Chapter 11 - Anna Moore

Anna Moore had worked for Bennetts four years.

Lily adored her.

She had access to house.

She knew security rhythms.

Could enter nursery without frightening Lily.

But Lily had said “not her” when pointing at staircase.

Why?

Because Anna wasn't wearing disguise then.

During nighttime visit she wore Emma’s crescent necklace and Emma’s old cardigan retrieved from storage.

Anna confessed.

She entered Lily’s room.

But claimed she did so at Sarah Keene’s instruction.

Sarah denied.

Anna produced messages.

They came from number Sarah used.

Sarah’s phone records showed messages sent.

Sarah stopped denying.

Why?

Emma had created bizarre contingency protocol before death.

Not instruction to terrorize Lily.

But memory test.

Emma suspected Lily had seen person accessing her office months earlier.

Lily was too young to describe.

Emma asked Anna occasionally show familiar objects and note Lily’s reactions.

After Emma died, Sarah continued protocol without Ethan’s consent.

Completely inappropriate.

Sarah told Anna wear Emma necklace near Lily because Emma believed necklace might trigger memory of person who stole documents while wearing it.

But Anna went further?

Sarah’s message:

LET HER SEE PENDANT. DO NOT PRETEND TO BE EMMA. DO NOT WAKE HER.

Anna entered while Lily awake unexpectedly.

Lily whispered “Mommy?”

Anna panicked.

Instead of correcting, she put finger to lips and left.

Thus Lily believed Mommy visited.

Why necklace under bed?

Chain broke.

Anna didn't realize.

Did Anna put bowl objects?

No.

Marcus did.

At instruction from woman with necklace—when?

He met woman two days earlier.

Before Anna stole? Anna got necklace from Sarah only previous night.

So there had been another woman wearing necklace earlier.

Meaning either Sarah had it first or necklace duplicated.

Sarah admitted she had recovered Emma necklace from Claire’s apartment.

Not stolen by stranger.

Claire had hired Sarah too? Actually Sarah working Emma contingency, had access? She took without permission believing it evidence. Wrong.

Sarah gave necklace to Anna previous night.

But Marcus met “woman with necklace” two days earlier.

Could be Sarah.

Marcus looked at Sarah lineup.

“No.”

Who possessed necklace then?

Sarah said it remained in her office safe until previous night.

Office access:

Sarah.

Assistant.

Rebecca Sloan—who had visited to review Rachel records.

Rebecca again.

She denied.

Then security camera from Sarah office showed Rebecca opening safe? No.

Instead assistant admitted loaning evidence envelope to Rebecca because Rebecca claimed legal authorization.

Rebecca had necklace for forty minutes two days earlier.

Rebecca finally broke.

“Yes. I met Marcus.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed Ethan to find B-14.”

“Why not hand it to him?”

“Because he wouldn't believe me.”

Everyone used same excuse.

Rebecca planted key/capsule via Marcus.

She arranged Claire’s anonymous package.

She wanted Claire blamed enough to provoke Ethan into investigating, but claimed never anticipated Claire would abuse Lily.

“What did you think Claire would do?”

“Make pudding. Find key.”

“You used a three-year-old.”

Rebecca cried.

“Yes.”

Why?

Because Rachel’s final letter identified Anna Mercer fraud author.

Not Rebecca.

Not Claire.

Not Peter.

Name was sealed in B-14 originally.

But Claire removed one page before surrendering packet.

Ethan turned toward Claire.

“What page?”

Claire whispered:

“The name.”

“Whose?”

May you like

Claire looked toward security guards.

“Marcus Hill.”
