Chapter 13 - The Black Token
Police found black token in Marcus’s apartment.
Small oval plastic device, no electronics? Maybe access fob.
It was a legacy access token for New Dawn archive vault.
Stamped:
ND-04.
Why hide it in Lily’s bowl?
Marcus hadn't.
Rebecca had.
She admitted central object was hers.
Rachel gave it before death.
Rebecca believed it opened physical archive cabinet containing original audit logs proving Marcus/Jonathan manipulation.
She placed it with B-14 clue to force Claire lead Ethan toward New Dawn evidence.
Then Marcus recognized token and retrieved it during chaos.
Why Claire screamed “Ethan—DON’T!” before object fell?
Claire knew black token.
Emma had shown photograph of it.
She believed whoever possessed it might be connected to fake Lily record.
She panicked because Ethan touching it would alert person monitoring hidden camera? But physical touch not alert. Better she feared token was evidence planted to frame her, because her fingerprints? Let's say Emma had told Claire token was stolen from Jonathan; Claire had once handled identical token during New Dawn employment. If police found it in bowl Claire prepared, it could implicate her.
Claire screamed because she recognized it as New Dawn master archive token and knew its presence made scene look as though she planted it.
But why force bowl over Lily? Claire’s conduct remains rage/control. She thought Lily knew where Emma’s second clue was and became frustrated. No secret protective motive.
The black token opened Cabinet 04 in off-site New Dawn records storage.
Police obtained warrant/consent through current owner.
Inside:
archived access logs.
They showed Jonathan Cross created fake Bennett test record years earlier under Thomas-authorized security test.
But more importantly:
Marcus Hill accessed archive after Jonathan’s death.
He copied Anna Morgan synthetic profile.
Then modified name to Anna Mercer.
That established fraud.
Also logs showed fake Lily certificate template created using Claire’s old staff field.
Marcus was mastermind of financial-record fabrication.
But not every event.
Rebecca manipulated Claire and Lily to expose him.
Sarah ran Emma’s inappropriate posthumous investigation.
Anna followed memory protocol.
Peter concealed federal cooperation.
Claire repeatedly lied and then abused Lily.
Marcus exploited chaos.
Again, no one person controlled everything.
Then why did Lily say “Mommy put it in there”?
Because Anna wore Emma necklace during night visit, accidentally reinforcing belief Emma had returned.
Next day Rebecca’s anonymous instruction asked Claire to ask Lily about Mommy.
When Lily saw Emma-associated blue key? Wait key belonged Emma hospital belongings. She linked it to nighttime “Mommy.”
But Lily specifically said Mommy put it in bowl.
Child interview clarified.
She had seen a woman’s hand place something in bowl before Claire entered? Hidden camera shows Marcus, male. Maybe she saw Rebecca? Rebecca placed black token directly before cameras shut? Let's define.
Earlier that morning, Rebecca arrived before Claire. She placed black token beneath empty bowl, wearing Emma’s crescent necklace borrowed/stolen. Lily saw from doorway and called her Mommy. Rebecca, startled, left without correcting. Later Marcus added key/capsule. Thus Lily’s statement was accurate from toddler perspective.
Rebecca admitted.
“I wore pendant because I wanted Claire to recognize Emma’s contingency signal.”
She never expected Lily watching.
“Why didn't you correct her?”
“I panicked.”
Ethan’s anger was quiet.
“You all keep panicking with my daughter standing in middle.”
Rebecca lowered head.
Yes.
Now every bowl clue nearly solved.
Chocolate pudding safe.
Claire forced it.
Black token planted by Rebecca.
Key/capsule planted by Marcus? Wait Rebecca hired Marcus to plant key/capsule, but Marcus is fraud mastermind. Why would he help expose himself? He could manipulate what went in. This is contradictory. Need resolve: Rebecca thought she hired Marcus because he was guard and offered cash, not knowing he was target; Marcus accepted so he could substitute/manipulate clues. He planted B-14/capsule after removing original evidence Rebecca intended. Black token separately planted by Rebecca before. He later recovered token.
What did Rebecca intend capsule note to say?
Not ETHAN MUST NOT KNOW.
Her original note:
ETHAN NEEDS TO SEE B-14.
Marcus replaced it with Emma imitation “ETHAN MUST NOT KNOW” to deepen confusion.
He used old Emma handwriting sample from documents.
But yesterday date?
Marcus added.
Thus no dead woman note.
Then B-14 packet originally contained Marcus clue; Claire had removed page because she feared it implicated security? She said she withheld name to investigate privately. Bad choice.
Everything was converging.
But one question remained:
Why had Emma created B-14, B-15 and B-16 at hospital?
She didn't.
Hospital records showed B-series lockers had been assigned by someone else.
Emma only used one.
The others were added after her death.
By whom?
Camera showed Peter Lang.
Peter had been building parallel evidence trail.
Why?
He finally answered:
“Because Emma asked me to make sure Ethan never learned everything at once.”
What “everything”?
Peter produced sealed envelope Emma left.
Do not open until Marcus Hill is identified.
Marcus had now been identified.
Inside:
If Marcus is using Jonathan’s old test records, then the fraud is bigger than one fake claimant.
Check Lily’s original newborn footprint card.
Ethan felt stomach drop.
“What’s wrong with her footprint?”
Peter answered:
“Nothing.”
