Chapter 14 - The Two Footprint Cards
Two footprint cards sounded like baby swap.
It wasn't.
Hospital routinely printed duplicate newborn identification cards.
One went family packet.
One retained nursery archive.
Both showed Lily’s footprints.
Both matched.
No second baby.
No switched child.
But one card contained barcode.
When scanned in legacy New Dawn-linked benefits database, it referenced:
BENNETT, LILY — CASE 04.
Other:
BENNETT, LILY — CASE 04-R.
R meant reconciliation copy.
Why important?
Marcus had used 04-R to fabricate history.
Emma discovered after fake certificate.
She realized old vulnerability could create contradictory documents while authentic biological/medical record remained intact.
She created B-14 packet to preserve proof.
Peter created B-15/B-16 after her death following her written instructions, splitting evidence so no single person could destroy it.
His secrecy was misguided but not malicious.
Why did Emma tell Peter Ethan must not learn everything at once?
Because she was investigating employees around him and didn't know whom she could trust.
Not because Ethan was culprit.
Emma eventually cleared Ethan before death.
Her final letter stated:
Ethan has nothing to do with this.
Peter had withheld that too long.
Ethan was furious.
“You let my wife investigate me from grave.”
Peter answered:
“I followed instructions literally.”
“That doesn't make them wise.”
“No.”
Marcus’s scheme:
He knew New Dawn’s old test environment could produce apparent contradictions.
He created fictional Anna Mercer claimant from synthetic Anna Morgan template.
To make missing records plausible, he manufactured contradictory Lily maternal record using Claire’s historic autofill error.
Margaret Reeves created unfiled fake birth-certificate draft after forged legal request.
Marcus then planned use it in settlement claim.
Emma discovered.
She traced to Jonathan’s old access.
Jonathan was already dead by then.
Marcus feared exposure.
After Emma died accidentally, he assumed safe.
Then Claire and Rebecca continued investigation.
He manipulated household cameras and clues to frame Claire, confuse Ethan and recover black token/archive evidence.
Rebecca, desperate to expose him, used Lily and Claire in her own manipulative setup.
Sarah continued Emma’s overly secretive contingency investigation.
Anna participated in ill-conceived memory test.
Claire’s aggression toward Lily was her own choice.
No one instructed her to cover Lily’s face.
No one forced her to force-feed child.
Ethan’s violent reaction toward second woman also remained subject review; protecting Lily explained urgency but not every later action.
Lily was safe.
Food was ordinary pudding.
No poison.
No hidden drug.
No biological secret.
No second Lily.
No false mother.
No resurrected Emma.
The central small object was black ND-04 archive token.
It was evidence of legacy system access that led directly to Marcus’s fabricated claimant scheme.
Why Claire feared it?
Because her name was embedded in old system and she knew token could make it appear she had accessed archive.
Why Lily said Mommy put it there?
Rebecca wore Emma’s crescent pendant and, from Lily’s three-year-old perspective, briefly looked like “Mommy” while placing token beneath bowl.
Why Claire knew there was something?
Anonymous instruction told her Emma’s clue was inside/under bowl, but she did not know exactly what.
Why yesterday’s date?
Marcus added it to forged note to make Emma’s posthumous trail seem current and frightening.
Why hidden cameras?
Marcus needed observe who discovered evidence and recover token.
Why camera outages?
He exploited legacy access Jonathan had left in security system.
Why two guards remained behind island?
Marcus needed stay near bowl.
Almost everything had answer.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why did Emma care so much about one $180,000 fake claim?”
Peter looked at him.
“She didn't.”
He produced final ledger.
Marcus’s Anna Mercer claim was test run.
There were twelve more synthetic claim files.
Potential exposure:
$4.8 million.
Some had already been paid.
Marcus wasn't sole beneficiary.
Money went through three law firms and two administrators.
Rebecca recognized one.
“That's impossible.”
“What?”
“That firm closed nine years ago.”
Yet payments continued.
Someone had been using dead corporate shell.
Marcus, confronted, smiled for first time.
“You think I built all of this?”
Maya said:
“You fabricated Anna Mercer.”
“Yes.”
“Did you create other claims?”
Marcus shook head.
“I copied someone who was already doing it.”
“Who?”
“I never knew.”
“Then where did you learn method?”
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“From file your wife found.”
“What file?”
“Case Zero.”
No Case Zero appeared in New Dawn records.
Marcus said it predated Lily.
Predated Claire.
Predated Jonathan.
Predated Bennett acquisition.
And it had nothing to do with current bowl incident.
A distinct mystery.
Emma had apparently discovered an older fraud while tracing Marcus.
She hid its location.
Only clue:
crescent pendant engraving.
14-9-3.
Peter finally understood.
“That's not a code.”
“What is it?”
“An address.”
14 West Ninth Street.
Third floor.
Ethan looked at Emma’s pendant.
