Chapter 4 - The Second Certificate

DNA testing was obvious next step.
Claire agreed voluntarily.
Results came back quickly from accredited lab.
Claire was not Lily’s biological mother.
Emma was.
Stored newborn samples and Emma’s archived clinical material confirmed maternal relationship.
Ethan was biological father.
No baby swap.
No hidden parentage.
The second certificate was fraudulent.
But why create it?
Hospital records contained only legitimate certificate naming Emma.
The Claire Morgan version had never been filed with state.
It was a draft PDF created inside hospital administrative system three days after Lily’s birth.
User account:
M.REEVES.
Margaret Reeves, hospital records supervisor.
Margaret retired eight months ago.
When investigators contacted her, she sounded terrified.
“I was waiting for this.”
She admitted generating document.
Someone gave her written request supposedly from hospital legal department to prepare “contingency guardianship identity record.”
Such document did not exist legally.
Margaret knew request was irregular.
She created draft anyway.
Then deleted it.
Emma somehow recovered copy.
Who ordered?
Margaret remembered initials:
C.B.
Ethan immediately thought Claire.
Claire’s surname wasn't Bennett.
Could C.B. mean Charles Bennett—Ethan’s late uncle?
Charles died years before Lily birth.
Could be internal code.
Then Margaret added:
“The person who brought request was a woman.”
Description:
brunette.
mid-thirties.
black clothes.
Claire fit.
So did thousands.
Margaret later identified Claire from photograph with moderate confidence.
Claire denied ever meeting her.
Phone location records from three years earlier? Old carrier data unavailable.
But Claire had one devastating problem.
Her laptop contained scanned copy of fake certificate.
Created months before Emma supposedly hired her.
Claire had known earlier.
She lied.
Why?
Claire asked private conversation with attorney.
Then told truth.
She had met Emma before Ethan knew.
Not as investigator.
As prospective surrogate coordinator.
Years earlier Ethan and Emma struggled to conceive.
They consulted fertility agency called New Dawn Family Services.
Claire worked there briefly as compliance contractor.
Emma eventually conceived naturally? To avoid complex reproductive fraud. Let's say fertility treatment succeeded with Emma carrying Lily herself. Claire reviewed paperwork.
During treatment, administrative system mistakenly listed Claire Morgan as intended mother on one intake template because her staff profile autofilled a field.
Error corrected.
Could fake certificate stem from that?
No.
New Dawn records did not connect directly to hospital birth registry.
Someone later used old error deliberately.
That made Claire’s name useful.
A ready-made alternate identity.
But for what?
Not to steal Lily.
No custody filing ever used it.
No insurance claim.
No passport.
It seemed designed to be discovered.
A planted contradiction.
Emma had found it.
Then hired Claire because her name appeared.
Claire initially concealed prior New Dawn connection from Ethan out of fear he would blame her.
Again, secrecy.
Then B-14 packet surfaced from Claire’s safe.
She surrendered it.
Inside:
fake certificate.
New Dawn intake sheet.
Photograph of unknown woman entering hospital records office.
And Emma’s handwritten note:
SOMEONE IS BUILDING A SECOND HISTORY FOR LILY.
Underneath:
NOT TO TAKE HER.
TO ERASE SOMEONE ELSE.
Who?
Before Ethan could ask, Maya received call from hospital basement.
They had searched storage area again.
Behind B-15 locker was third key taped beneath shelf.
B-16.
