Chapter 1 - The Bowl

Lily’s scream reached Ethan before he reached the kitchen.

“Daddy!”

He sprinted through the foyer and crossed the doorway at full speed.

Then he saw his three-year-old daughter.

Lily sat near the granite island, both hands desperately pushing against the rim of a stainless-steel mixing bowl that had been forced over her face. Her tiny shoulders shook violently beneath it.

Claire stood over her.

For half a second, Ethan couldn't move.

Then rage took over.

“GET AWAY FROM HER!”

A second woman stepped between them.

Ethan drove through the confrontation, sending her backward across the granite island. She landed hard across the countertop as the two security guards behind it recoiled in shock.

Ethan didn't look at her again.

He tore the bowl away.

Lily’s face appeared beneath it—red, soaked with tears, brown residue smeared around her mouth.

She reached for him immediately.

“I’ve got you.”

Ethan lifted her against his chest.

Lily wrapped both arms around his neck and buried her face against him.

Then she whispered something.

“She made me eat it.”

Ethan looked down.

Brown residue covered part of Lily’s pale-pink dress.

His eyes shifted to Claire.

Claire had been furious seconds earlier.

Now she looked afraid.

Ethan approached overturned bowl.

Beneath remaining brown mixture was something small.

Metallic.

He reached toward it.

“Ethan—DON’T!”

Claire lunged.

One guard caught her before she reached him.

Lily raised trembling finger.

“Mommy put it in there.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Lily’s mother was Emma Bennett.

Emma had been dead for eleven months.

At least that was what Lily had been told.

Ethan slowly tilted bowl.

Something slid through brown mixture.

A flash of silver.

Claire began shaking her head.

“Don't.”

The object dropped onto granite with a tiny metallic click.

A key.

Not an ordinary house key.

It was smaller, with blue enamel circle at top.

Ethan recognized it.

He had seen one exactly like it before.

The night Emma died.

It had been attached to her hospital belongings.

Then it disappeared before Ethan could collect them.

Claire whispered:

“You have no idea what that opens.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Then tell me.”

Claire said nothing.

Lily suddenly lifted her head from Ethan’s shoulder.

“No, Daddy.”

“What?”

“That isn't the one.”

Ethan looked at key.

Lily pointed toward bowl.

“There’s another one.”

He searched mixture.

His fingers touched something.

Not another key.

A small plastic capsule.

Inside was a tightly folded strip of paper.

Ethan opened it.

Only four handwritten words:

ETHAN MUST NOT KNOW.

He recognized handwriting immediately.

May you like

Emma’s.

And beneath those words was yesterday’s date.
