Chapter 7 - The Man Named David
Police enhanced mansion exterior footage and traced suspect vehicle through traffic cameras.
Rental car.
Rented legally by:
David Mercer, 46.
Address in North Carolina.
Photograph showed dark-haired man with graying temples.
Ethan stared.
Not Daniel.
But something about eyes felt familiar.
David was located at hotel.
He did not flee.
He asked attorney.
Then voluntarily surrendered ring.
Thomas Bennett’s original signet.
Forensic provenance could not prove every year of possession, but jeweler confirmed likely original.
“How did you get it?”
“Daniel gave it to me.”
“When?”
“2005.”
“Is Daniel alive?”
David looked at Ethan through interview-room glass.
“No.”
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
“When did he die?”
“2006.”
“Where?”
“Canada.”
“Why wasn't family told?”
“Because he asked me not to.”
David’s story:
Daniel survived boating incident.
Thomas was aboard.
They argued.
No murder attempt.
During struggle over documents, boat struck something? Keep vague. Daniel and Thomas were thrown? Thomas returned somehow. Daniel made shore separately, injured but mobile.
Daniel believed Thomas would use influence to discredit him and force him back.
So he disappeared voluntarily.
He contacted David Mercer, former foundation investigator unrelated to Lake Mercer name coincidence? Better David surname Mercer coincidental but avoid. Could use David Hale. But already user prompt no David. Let's call David Cole to avoid Mercer. Yet we've said David Mercer. Keep and explain no relation to lake name? Lake Mercer named town, fine.
David helped Daniel travel under legal temporary privacy? Cannot create fake identity easily. Daniel used own identity initially, then adopted name through legitimate process? Declared dead later. He could live under alias informally but problematic. Let's say Daniel lived abroad using middle/last variation and later sought legal identity counsel; not focus.
Why abandon Ethan?
Daniel believed Thomas threatened cut Ethan from family and destroy mother if Daniel returned.
That sounded self-serving.
Ethan said:
“He could have called me.”
David agreed.
“Yes.”
Daniel made choice.
Not all disappearance forced.
In 2006 Daniel developed aggressive leukemia? Then dies quickly. Need proof.
David produced hospital records and cremation certificate from Nova Scotia under Daniel’s legal middle name, Thomas Daniel Bennett? But declared death later. Could be hard. He used Daniel Thomas Bell? Let's say DNA from stored tissue compared now? Too much.
Maya verified death through Canadian authorities and fingerprints from 2005 passport? Enough.
Daniel died eleven months after disappearance from acute leukemia diagnosed after he left.
He never returned.
Before death, he gave David ring Thomas lost during boat incident.
He also gave box of records.
“Why wait twenty years?”
“Daniel made me promise not to contact Ethan until Thomas and Eleanor were both gone.”
“They've both been dead years.”
“I know.”
“Then why now?”
David looked ashamed.
“I was afraid.”
“Of dead people?”
“Of what documents would do to Bennett Foundation.”
David had built career partly funded by foundation contracts.
Revealing Daniel archive could implicate respected people.
He delayed.
Then learned old records were scheduled for destruction during digital transition.
He decided force issue.
Why involve Sophie?
David claimed he never intended harm.
His plan was outrageous.
He wanted Eleanor to stage a shocking but controlled scene in front of security camera, timed so Emma and police arrived immediately.
He believed tank was shallow enough? It wasn't. He relied on Eleanor holding Sophie? But prompt requires release submerged and lid. Need David explicitly instructed? If he did, he's culpable. Yes.
He instructed Eleanor to place Sophie into tank briefly and close lid, believing Emma was seconds away.
That is reckless endangerment, no excuse.
He wanted police present so footage and ring could not be buried by Bennett family.
Ethan nearly lunged across table.
“You used my baby to send me a message?”
David lowered eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why not mail ring?”
“I tried.”
“What?”
Three packages sent previous year.
None reached Ethan.
Who intercepted?
Bennett Foundation security.
Vanessa Cole.
She admitted receiving packages flagged by security because they contained unknown metal object and Daniel documents.
She sent them to legal.
General counsel archived pending verification.
Nobody told Ethan.
Institutional caution became concealment.
David became convinced normal channels were compromised.
So he escalated monstrously.
But another problem remained.
David said he handed Sophie to Eleanor.
Thus mystery person identified?
Not yet.
Because security footage of David at hotel showed him checking in at exact minute Sophie was handed over.
Thirty miles away.
He could not be both places.
David looked genuinely confused.
“If I wasn't there yet…”
Maya asked:
“Who had your ring?”
David whispered:
“Eleanor.”
“No. Footage shows ring on person handing Sophie to Eleanor.”
David’s face emptied.
Then:
“There are two original rings.”
Again two?
He opened Daniel’s box.
Inside was photograph.
Thomas and another man wearing matching black-stone rings.
The other man was Thomas’s younger brother:
