Chapter 10 - The Switch

A realistic weighted doll had been delivered to mansion gala storage.

Police found its empty box.

Where was doll?

In Eleanor’s car trunk.

She had removed it that morning.

“Why?”

Eleanor finally told truth.

Because she received second instruction.

Not from David.

Anonymous message:

THE DOLL PROVES NOTHING. USE SOPHIE OR DANIEL’S STORY DIES AGAIN.

Attached:

Thomas’s private letter to Eleanor Vale.

A letter only one other person should possess.

Thomas’s estate attorney.

Jonathan Reed, 61.

Jonathan had administered Thomas estate.

He knew Daniel survived.

He knew David.

He knew ring.

He knew Thomas’s instructions to Eleanor.

Was Jonathan mastermind?

He denied.

His email account had been compromised? Need avoid cyber cliché. Physical archive copy missing from office after former clerk accessed storage.

Former clerk:

Vanessa Cole.

Before foundation role, Vanessa worked Jonathan’s estate practice.

She had access.

Vanessa already present.

Did she send message?

“No.”

Investigators searched her devices with warrant.

No evidence.

Then Eleanor admitted she never received message digitally.

Printed envelope placed under windshield.

No trace.

Who knew she would use car?

Household staff.

David.

Vanessa.

Ethan.

Emma.

Eleanor herself.

Security camera parking showed person in catering uniform near vehicle.

Face visible briefly.

Michael Ross.

Gala coordinator.

Michael denied.

Footage showed him.

He confessed.

Vanessa asked him deliver envelope.

Vanessa had lied again.

Why force real Sophie?

Vanessa finally stopped protecting herself.

“I didn't know envelope said use Sophie.”

“What did you think was inside?”

“Instructions from David.”

“Did you write it?”

“No.”

“Who gave it to you?”

“Jonathan Reed.”

Jonathan had lied.

Confronted with chain, estate attorney admitted drafting note—but denied line ordering real baby.

He provided his original copy:

THE DOLL PROVES NOTHING IF CAMERA CANNOT SEE RING. MAKE SURE RING IS VISIBLE OR DANIEL’S STORY DIES AGAIN.

Someone altered:

MAKE SURE RING IS VISIBLE

into:

USE SOPHIE.

How?

The envelope Eleanor received was retyped imitation.

Who substituted?

Michael?

He swore no.

Vanessa?

She passed sealed.

Could be Jonathan lying.

Forensics found printer source.

Foundation office.

Printer access log not individual-specific.

Many staff.

But camera showed Claire? No Claire in prompt/story. Better introduce foundation assistant Rachel Moore, 29.

Rachel had printed batch gala documents that morning.

She denied note.

Then she saw photograph of altered page and recognized formatting.

“This came from Daniel archive.”

What?

The phrase USE SOPHIE OR DANIEL’S STORY DIES AGAIN wasn't random.

Daniel had written similar line in 2006:

USE THE FOUNDATION OR SAMUEL’S STORY DIES WITH ME.

Someone adapted Daniel’s language.

Who had read entire archive?

David.

Jonathan.

Vanessa.

And one person nobody considered:

Ethan.

Daniel archive packages intercepted by foundation legal had eventually been forwarded to Ethan’s personal office eight months earlier.

Signed receipt:

E. BENNETT.

Ethan swore never saw them.

His executive assistant signed on behalf.

Assistant:

Emma.

Emma stared.

“I remember a box.”

“Where did it go?”

“I gave it to your mother’s archive room.”

“Why?”

“It said Daniel Bennett. I thought it was old estate material.”

Did Emma read it?

“No.”

Could not prove.

Then archive-room camera from eight months earlier showed Emma opening box.

She had lied.

Ethan turned toward wife.

“What did you find?”

Emma's face crumpled.

“A letter from Daniel.”

“You knew he survived?”

“For eight months.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because the letter was about you.”

Inside Daniel wrote:

ETHAN STILL DOESN’T REMEMBER WHY HE WAS IN WATER.

ASK MOM WHAT SHE DID.

Lake Mercer mystery wasn't finished.

And Emma had been hiding it.
