Chapter 3 - The Brother Without a Body

Daniel’s death investigation had never found body.
That fact suddenly mattered.
But Maya refused let family leap from missing body to living brother.
“People forge signatures.”
Ethan nodded.
“I know.”
“People wear dead men’s jewelry.”
“I know.”
“Do you have any recent proof Daniel is alive?”
“No.”
Then they reopened old case.
Daniel disappeared during solo boat trip after family argument.
Weather deteriorated.
Boat later found damaged and drifting.
Personal effects aboard.
Search unsuccessful.
Seven years later, court issued declaration of death for estate purposes.
No evidence murder.
No evidence survival.
But one detail stood out.
Three days before trip, Daniel withdrew $18,000.
Never found.
At time police assumed travel/boat expenses.
Could support planned disappearance.
Why leave?
Thomas and Daniel had been fighting over Bennett Foundation.
Daniel accused father of using charitable arm to protect corporate reputation while ignoring unsafe product complaints.
Thomas denied.
Records showed dispute involved mobility device recalled voluntarily after manufacturing defect.
No deaths linked in available records.
Company settled several claims.
Daniel wanted public disclosure sooner.
Thomas worried premature statements would damage investigation.
Family fracture.
Then Daniel vanished.
Was he whistleblower who disappeared voluntarily?
Possibly.
But why return sixteen years later and endanger Sophie?
Ethan couldn't reconcile.
Emma asked Eleanor directly during supervised interview:
“Did Daniel hand you Sophie?”
Eleanor looked at her.
“I don't know.”
“You saw person.”
“I saw part of his face.”
“Man or woman?”
“Man.”
“Did he look like Daniel?”
“I never met Daniel.”
Eleanor began working Bennett family after disappearance.
She knew photographs.
“But did he resemble him?”
“Yes.”
“Then why won't you say it was him?”
“Because he told me he wasn't.”
Maya leaned forward.
“What did he say?”
Eleanor answered:
“Daniel Bennett died because Thomas needed him dead.”
Ethan felt sick.
“Meaning physically?”
“He wouldn't explain.”
Could mean identity.
Could mean legal disappearance.
Could mean family lie.
Then Eleanor described coercion.
Three weeks earlier, she received video of herself accessing Bennett archive room.
She had done so legitimately for estate cataloging.
Anonymous sender claimed she stole documents.
Then sent copy of financial transfer suggesting Eleanor had accepted $90,000 from Bennett Foundation.
She had.
But payment was legitimate severance/deferred compensation? She said bonus from Thomas estate. Records unclear.
Sender threatened make it look like theft unless she cooperated.
First instruction: install tank.
Second: position camera.
Third: at specific time on gala-prep day, take Sophie from person wearing ring and lower her into water.
Eleanor said she refused.
Then sender showed video feed of Emma driving toward mansion with police? How would sender know. More simply threatened that officers were already coming and promised Sophie would be in water less than 20 seconds before Emma arrived. Eleanor irrationally believed staged “rescue” intended expose someone.
“What were you trying to accomplish?”
“I thought they wanted Emma filmed rescuing Sophie.”
“Why?”
“They said it would prove she was a fit mother.”
Emma stared.
“That makes no sense.”
Eleanor knew.
“But there was custody dispute.”
There wasn't.
Emma and Ethan were married.
No custody issue.
Unless someone had fed Eleanor false documents.
Police found them.
Forged petition alleging Emma was under investigation for neglect and Bennett family planned remove Sophie.
Entirely false.
Eleanor had been manipulated.
Still, she chose to obey instruction that placed baby in immediate danger.
That remained her responsibility.
Then Maya asked:
“Why close lid?”
Eleanor whispered:
“Because he said if I didn't follow every step, Sophie would disappear the way Daniel did.”
Who was “he”?
“The man with ring.”
Then another officer entered.
They had identified ring fingerprint? Can't from video. Instead installer signature comparison.
D. Bennett signature from tank installation was compared with Daniel’s old records.
Not identical.
But handwriting expert found deliberate imitation.
Someone wanted them to believe Daniel had returned.
And security footage contained one clue Ethan hadn't noticed.
May you like
The ring was on right hand.
Thomas always wore it on left.
