Chapter 4 - The Wrong Hand

That changed ring from proof to costume.

Whoever handed Sophie to Eleanor wanted recognition.

Ethan was supposed to see ring.

The camera was deliberately positioned.

The tank deliberately placed.

The hand deliberately entered frame.

Then person remained hidden.

It was theater.

But why?

Maya replayed footage.

Hand passes Sophie.

Ring visible for approximately two seconds.

Then sleeve withdraws.

Dark gray wool.

No face.

No voice.

A second camera outside mansion showed possible suspect leaving through service gate minutes later.

Height around six feet.

Baseball cap.

No useful face.

Vehicle parked beyond camera coverage.

Professional enough to hide identity.

Sloppy enough to display ring.

Therefore ring was message.

Ethan asked:

“To me?”

“Probably.”

“Why Daniel?”

“That's what we need.”

Then Sophie’s nursery was searched.

Nothing unusual until Emma noticed music box moved.

Inside drawer beneath it:

old photograph.

Daniel Bennett at twenty-four.

Thomas beside him.

Ethan seventeen.

On back:

ONE OF THESE MEN LIED ABOUT THE WATER.

Emma stared.

“Water?”

Daniel’s boating disappearance.

Maybe accident story false.

But photograph had been placed recently.

Housekeeper dusted drawer previous week.

Someone had entered nursery.

Ethan security system logs showed no unauthorized entry.

Possible insider.

Eleanor had access.

She denied planting.

Staff interviewed.

One name emerged:

Michael Ross, temporary gala coordinator.

Hired two months earlier through Bennett Foundation.

Michael had access to mansion.

Personnel records normal.

Address real.

But Social Security verification? Don't need. Background check found identity genuine.

Michael was thirty-seven.

Too young to be Daniel, who would now be forty-one? Daniel 25 when Ethan17, Ethan38 now => 21 years later, Daniel46. Earlier said 16 years inconsistency. Let's correct canon now: Ethan 38, Daniel eight older 46. Daniel vanished when Ethan17 = 21 years ago. Thomas died six years ago. Court declaration seven years after. We should silently use 21 years.

Michael looked nothing like Daniel.

But phone records showed Michael called Eleanor morning incident.

He claimed gala delivery question.

Then disappeared after police arrived.

Found next day at lawyer’s office.

He voluntarily cooperated.

Michael said he was hired by Rebecca Sloan? Need new name maybe Bennett Foundation director Vanessa Cole. Let's introduce.

Foundation executive director:

Vanessa Cole, 42.

Michael’s job legitimate.

He had no knowledge tank plot.

But he admitted stranger approached him offering $5,000 for temporary access badge.

Michael refused.

Reported to Vanessa.

Vanessa told him cancel badge and say nothing until internal security reviewed.

She never informed Ethan.

Why?

“I didn't want gala scandal.”

That excuse infuriated him.

“You knew someone wanted access to my house.”

“I knew someone wanted a temporary credential. I didn't know why.”

“Where is badge?”

“Destroyed.”

Security logs showed badge used after supposed destruction.

Someone cloned? Avoid cyber detail. Physical badge not destroyed. Vanessa lied.

Police searched office.

Badge found in locked drawer.

Why lie?

Vanessa admitted she kept it because she was conducting own investigation.

“Into whom?”

“Eleanor.”

Why Eleanor?

Vanessa believed Eleanor had been diverting foundation money.

The $90,000 payment anonymous sender used for blackmail looked suspicious to her too.

Vanessa hired auditor.

Auditor found payment legitimate.

Thomas Bennett had left Eleanor deferred compensation agreement.

So no theft.

Vanessa never told Eleanor suspicion.

Then why keep badge?

She wanted monitor whether Eleanor entered restricted foundation archive during gala.

Questionable.

Not tank.

Then police checked badge access.

It opened mansion service door at 2:11 p.m.—thirty minutes before Sophie was handed to Eleanor.

Camera showed hand scanning badge.

Ring visible.

Same ring.

So mystery person had Michael’s badge.

How?

Michael swore never surrendered it.

Vanessa had kept it.

Only three people had access to her drawer.

Vanessa.

Her assistant.

And Bennett Foundation board chair.

Emma asked:

“Who’s chair?”

Ethan answered.

“My mother was.”

“She's dead.”

“After she died, seat went vacant.”

“Who holds it now?”

Ethan looked toward documents.

“Daniel.”

Emma stared.

“You said Daniel is legally dead.”

“He is.”

Yet current foundation bylaws still listed:

CHAIR — DANIEL T. BENNETT, SUSPENDED PENDING VACANCY DETERMINATION.

For twenty-one years, family had never formally replaced him.
