Chapter 5 - The Empty Chair
It sounded impossible until lawyers explained.
Daniel’s chairmanship was not active.
Foundation charter contained unusual provision requiring supermajority board vote to remove founding-family chair.
After Daniel vanished, board suspended powers and delegated duties to vice chair.
They never bothered formal amendment.
His name remained historical artifact.
No ghost controlling foundation.
No secret authority.
But someone had recently used Daniel’s dormant board credential.
Foundation document portal showed three accesses under D.BENNETT in previous month.
IT review found old account reactivated by administrator.
Who authorized?
Paper request bearing Ethan’s signature.
Forged.
Who processed?
Vanessa Cole.
She claimed request arrived through interoffice mail.
“Did you call me?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“It looked legitimate.”
“You reactivated dead man's account.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I thought it was for archive migration.”
Weak.
She was placed on administrative leave pending review.
Could Vanessa be ring wearer?
Video showed masculine hand? Not definitive.
Tank installer described man.
Badge camera showed build likely male.
So Vanessa may facilitate unknowingly or knowingly.
Then portal access revealed files viewed:
Daniel Bennett board minutes.
Thomas Bennett personal correspondence.
Bennett aquatic rehabilitation grants.
Sophie Bennett medical file.
Emma stiffened.
“Why Sophie?”
Sophie had no foundation medical file.
Except she did.
Bennett Foundation covered a neonatal physical therapy consultation after birth due minor muscle tone concern.
Resolved.
Normal.
But record contained blood type.
A+.
Daniel’s old medical file also A+.
Meaningless.
Millions share.
Yet anonymous note arrived:
THE WATER WAS NEVER ABOUT SOPHIE.
IT WAS ABOUT ETHAN REMEMBERING DANIEL.
That clarified spectacle.
Sophie was used as trigger to force Ethan examine brother’s disappearance.
Who would do something monstrous to reveal old truth?
Someone who believed end justified means.
Eleanor?
She was participant, not architect.
Daniel himself?
If alive, why not contact Ethan?
Because perhaps he believed Ethan wouldn't listen.
Maya dug into 2005 disappearance.
Boat was called Mercy.
Damage originally attributed collision with submerged debris during storm.
Modern review of archived photographs found damage could also be consistent with deliberate preexisting sabotage? We shouldn't assert technical. A marine engineer said original evidence insufficient to determine.
No proof accident.
No proof sabotage.
But Daniel had sent letter to Thomas day before:
If you force me out of Foundation, I will tell Ethan what happened at Lake Mercer.
Lake Mercer.
Water again.
Not ocean.
An inland lake in Virginia where Bennett family owned summer property.
Ethan remembered.
When he was twelve, he nearly drowned there.
Daniel saved him.
Family story.
Ethan slipped from dock.
Daniel jumped in.
Pulled him out.
Thomas praised Daniel as hero.
Ethan remembered very little because he hit head? Could be trauma. He remembered cold water, Daniel’s voice, father shouting.
Why would Daniel threaten reveal “what happened” if simple accident?
Maya requested old hospital record.
Ethan had been treated for water aspiration and concussion.
Admission notes:
PATIENT REPORTED BEING PUSHED.
Twelve-year-old Ethan told nurse someone pushed him into lake.

Daniel.
Ethan stared.
“My brother pushed me?”
Then next line:
Patient later recanted, states “Dad said I slipped.”
Thomas had changed story.
And Daniel was still celebrated for rescue.
Why would Daniel push Ethan in, then save him?
Unless Ethan had misunderstood.
Or someone wanted that incident buried.
Then Maya found another page.
Nurse noted circular black imprint on Ethan’s upper arm.
Patient said:
“Ring hurt me.”
