Chapter 6 - Lake Mercer
Ethan’s memories returned in fragments.
Not reliable enough to treat as evidence.
A dock.
Daniel shouting.
Thomas angry.
Cold water.
A hand grabbing him.
His father’s ring.
Had Thomas pushed him?
Ethan resisted.
“My father loved us.”
Maya answered carefully.
“That doesn't tell us what happened.”
They found Daniel’s childhood friend, Aaron Pike.
Aaron had been at lake house that weekend.
He remembered argument between Thomas and Daniel.
Thomas discovered Daniel copying foundation financial records.
Daniel accused father of hiding settlement involving defective rehabilitation equipment.
Thomas grabbed folder.
Ethan, twelve, wandered onto dock.
Daniel shouted for him leave.
Thomas turned.
Ethan backed away.
He fell into water.
Aaron did not see push.
Daniel jumped immediately and saved him.
So Ethan’s initial “Danny pushed me” may have meant Daniel pushed past him? Or confused.
Ring mark could have come from Thomas grabbing Ethan after rescue.
No evidence Thomas intentionally pushed son.
Mystery became less sensational but more credible.
What did family hide?
Not attempted murder.
The argument.
Thomas told everyone Ethan slipped because revealing context would expose Daniel’s whistleblowing.
Daniel resented being made silent.
Years later he threatened reveal Lake Mercer because it proved Thomas had prioritized company secrecy even during family emergency.
Then Daniel vanished.
Was disappearance connected?
Aaron said Daniel planned leave Bennett Foundation.
“He wasn't suicidal. He was furious.”
“Did he mention boat trip?”
“Yes.”
“He said he was meeting someone.”
“Who?”
“A reporter.”
No reporter ever came forward.
Maybe meeting didn't occur.
Phone records long archived? Some files existed in police case.
Daniel called number registered to payphone near marina.
Then unknown.
One witness saw second person board Mercy.
Original investigation dismissed because witness uncertain.
Description:
male, mid-forties, gray jacket.
Thomas was fifty-one.
Could father have been aboard?
Thomas told police he was home with Eleanor.
Eleanor Bennett corroborated.
Both now dead.
But toll receipt showed Thomas’s car near Maine coast next morning.
He lied about location.
Ethan felt world shift.
Could Thomas have caused Daniel’s disappearance?
Then ring becomes clue.
If Daniel survived confrontation, perhaps he took father’s ring later? But Thomas wore ring for years afterward.
Unless there were two rings.
Jeweler records solved.
Thomas had two identical signet rings made.
One in 1997.
Replacement in 2006 after original was lost.
Daniel vanished 2005.
Thomas told jeweler he lost original “at sea.”
That was enormous.
The ring shown in current footage might be original lost during Daniel disappearance.
Someone possessed it for twenty-one years.
If Daniel survived boat, he could have taken it.
Or whoever was with Thomas.
Maya asked jeweler about silver fracture.
Replacement had no fracture originally.
Current footage ring showed fracture.
Old photographs before 2005 showed original ring with same silver repair.
So yes:
The hand on Sophie video wore Thomas’s original lost ring.
Not replacement supposedly buried/transferred after Thomas death.
Ethan whispered:
“Whoever handed Eleanor my daughter had something from the boat.”
Then Eleanor requested another interview.
She had remembered voice.
Not enough to identify person.
But phrase.
When man handed Sophie to her, he said:
“Tell Ethan his brother kept his promise.”
“What promise?”
Eleanor didn't know.
Ethan did.
At Lake Mercer after rescue, Daniel had wrapped him in blanket.
Ethan suddenly remembered brother whispering:
May you like
“If Dad ever scares you again, I’ll come back.”
Twenty-one years later, someone had returned carrying their father’s lost ring.
